Coping loss with chess

I'm going to start this post by saying: I'm not sure if it's TOS safe or not. Speaking about death may be considered vulgar, so, read at your own risk. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/chesscom-posting-rules

Recently, I've lost someone that is close to me. Now, I understand that of all things, the chess.com forums aren't the place to mourn, so I won't be doing that. This is a post about chess, after all. I thought I'd get some feedback from chess players, instead of asking someone who doesn't play.

Recently, i've discovered that when I get sad, or start to cry, reciting chess lines in my head makes me feel better. Strangely enough, it just helps me to keep my mind off things. Whenever i think about things too hard, I'll say in my head "e4 e5 nf3 nc6 bc4 nf6 ng5 bc5 nxf7 bxf2+ kxf2 nxe5+" in my head, repeatedly. A traxler line, since it's a line i have committed to memory.

I kinda wanna know if I'm alone, which I probably am, lol. Is it healthy? Thoughts?

I guess that's true. It's something distracting that I can easily think about. I'm glad i'm not alone, thanks.

I can imagine how you feel and I'm very sorry. Having experienced the loss of many loved ones, I can tell you that distracting oneself from the sadness of such an event is always the first step of dealing with it. Everyone has their own way of taking their minds off of loss. As time goes on, it will become unnecessary, as you will accept the loss as the fact that it is and it will become another part of your life. I hope that time comes soon. Best wishes.

I love your pfp, I can't remember what is from though. I watched it when I was a child I think?

Anyways, I'd just recite 1.e4 e5 2. ke2

We all mourn differently, but anything that can bring us a sense of normalcy, even for a little while, is to be cherished. For some it's music, for others a crossword puzzle. If chess fits the bill for you, that's great. I have to think, though, that there are few things that occupy the mind and distract it from all else like chess. Sorry for your loss. And, yes, you're being completely healthy.

i can relate on a personal level but in general its not healthy and idk why we still have to think this way, it honestly just makes me feel burntout and like crap but the aftermath i feel even great. chess pretty much has helped me cope with many different things but i think really for me its just the idea that no matter where you are, no matter if your alone or are poor, chess is always a game that pulls at your heartstrings and gives you a new sense of life, for me its like i am witnessing a new heaven, a new world where i feel ok

Marcyful

Coping mechanisms come in all shapes and forms, so it shouldn't come off as strange that reciting chess lines is what makes you feel better during times of distress. For me, whenever I'm feeling down, good old runs of soul knight and otherworld legends never fail to bring me back up.

After reading this post I actually kind of started doing this. Started memorizing my d4 theory and saying it aloud (or in my head). Forgot to come back and say that.

I've moved on. Of course, i still get sad whenever i think about it, but i just have to accept it's something that's happened. I also revised my coping mechanism to say nxe4+, because that is a genuine mistake, but now whenever i get sad i do that and think of little guinea pig when i do the thing, which is kinda funny in retrospective.
