Dear chess.com

Chess.com, I'm not trying to complain, I'm just saying you're wasting a lot of space and a lot of the ads are very inconvenient and terribly annoying. There is quite a bit of space that you could still use instead of having these popup ads. If you could do something about this that would be great. I know you've probably been getting a lot of complaints, so it would be great if you would help.

I guess there's a difference between not trying to complain and trying not to complain.

In all seriousness, though, having to view those ads are how you pay your way as a non-paying member of this site.  There's a lot offered here for free so Chess.com monetizing some of the real estate on your monitor is a small price to pay, and entirely justified given that trade off.

There are a couple of options posted here to rid yourself of these ads, but the one that's not been mentioned is ponying up for a membership.

Just get a membership. It's worth it!

Eric needs the ads to encourage membership and doesn't he make some $ from those ads?

Why tell non-members how to eliminate them?

general public knowledge...google, etc - the genie is already out of the bottle.

it's no secret how to block those ads (and occasional attack vectors).

There is a lot of public info out there -Ah you and LisaV know that is not the point I was addressing.

See how the original issue never gets answered. There is an attempt to "deflect" away from the point I was making. And the normally very talkative LisaV remains silent, IMDeviate came to her rescue. He is a Knight in shinning armour.

Boy these guys are great chess players.

I'm starting to seriously doubt it. The only benefit is training. Playing on here sucks. I seriously have more fun on FICS and BabasChess. I even drew a game with at least 5 pawns and a bishop vs a king because the crappy software wouldn't promote a pawn. The next game... The server timed out twice.

Hence me being on here for three months and only playing "10" games... Until they get the live chess right save your money.

Could it be an issue with your connection? I've experienced one time-out during Live Chess in 3 months. And no other problems. And by the way, the Tactics Trainer and Chess Mentor alone is worth the membership fee.

What issue is that?

Kingpatzer

I don't play live chess here. It's really not worth it compared to what you can get at other sites with client side software. However, the videos, Chess Mentor system, some of the articles, forums, and quite a few other bits keep me coming back and I don't regret my membership one bit.

I happen to believe in supporting good sites, so I don't mind paying for the extras here. But Chess.com really needs a "dasher like" client for live chess.

Titin_Spector

I think Eric and his staff members have to eat three times a day. It is the price you pay for using the site they have develop. Every free website has adverts thought some sites like Google or Facebook do advertising in a bit more subliminal way. But even, when you pay to go to the cinema, even having paid for that if you see that XXX is driving a Ducati, someone takes a coca-cola or so... this is not accidently, consume moves the world

cigoL

Running Linux, I'm happy Live Chess works without client software.

Good for him!

Anyway, if you have 1-2 hours spare hours a day, diamond membership has enough bang for its buck and to spare!  Chessmentor is like having a personal chess coach, Tactics Trainer is a AMAZING tool with you're tactics(I've found that after doing for just 1 hour a day makes a HUGE difference in you're tatics!

Making multi-OS capable software isn't hard, and lazy sites that develop for a single platform should be taken to task. But even that said, my experience on ICC running Dasher inside VMWare is still superior to playing here without it.

TheGrobe

I disagree -- thin is in.

If chess.com were to do anything in this space, they should simply open up an API and leave the client side UI development to others.

Aren't ads wasted on people too cheap to buy a membership ? If they won't spend for the nominal dues here, what makes you think they'll buy anything?
