If your opponent disables chat before you've even spoken, don't take it personally :)
I know of many parents and teachers that bring children onto the site to learn and play chess. One of the first things they ask me before their youngsters are on here, is how do they disable chat.
A lot of members, for no apparent reason have been subjected to verbal abuse in their game chat. If this has happened on more than one occassion, they really don't want to take the chance of it happening again, and rather than having to explain to everyone they play, the reasons why they are disabling chat, they just disable at the beginning. It only takes one abusive comment to put a player off wanting to play in that game with his opponent.
Some members want to be able to come onto the site, play a game of chess without having to worry what they are going to see in that chatbox when they look at the screen.
Some think of a childs safety first
Some are protecting themselves against possible abuse
And as Niekro said in post #2 some prefer to play in silence
It is still each players option to disable chat, for whatever reason, so please don't think they are being rude.
Was that post #7,kohai?? :-)

Yes, it was. Thanks for the responses. I always wish good luck when I start a game. I've had dozens of players not answering, but it was the first time someone has disabled the chat in over 500 games...

Woah Kohai's point is true.
There are children in this site, and if you look at my profile, I'm just a teenager. With the generation changing and changing with these abusive comments, I'm thinking of clicking 'disable chat' in any game.
Chess is a game for us to have fun with. Chess.com is a site for us to interact with people from around the world.
So let's have fun and continue with our chess on the side created by Erik!

Disable chat. This feature, to me, just makes no sense. Instead of an all or nothing feature why no make the chat window actually work better? Why not have a delete comment feature?

Well, if you don't want to see those abusive comments, why don't you click 'disable chat' in the first place?

I like to chat but when I am playing a 5 minutes live chess game I don't have time to think about what I answer and what I move. I want to concentrate on the moves.I can imagine that's a reason people don't want to chat.
Well Kohai, if there are all kind of people on the street, this does not mean that the children should be kept locked inside.
As about disabling the chat, I find it very rude. Basically your opponent expects that he or she is playing a jerk. Otherwise he could have waited at least for you to say something in the chat and only then to disable it, if he thought that your comment was not appropriate.

I agree costelus. It kind of reminds me of people that think they're being smart by not helping others because it could come back to bite them. It's a sad day when we start justifying our poor behavior "for the safety of the children." Also it's well documented that children of over-protective parents have trouble adjusting to the real world.

I've especially checked - he didn't disable the chat when it was empty. Then I wrote "good luck" and he disabled it. So it means that "good luck" is something abusive...
I'm recently playing 2 games with a person who disabled chat in both games after I said "good luck". I've always thought that chat is disabled when someone says something rude. Does it mean that in my opponent's opinion I behaved rudely by wishing him good luck? Or is it him who is being rude?
