Does chess.com actually do anything about stalling?

Like this guy just now stalled for 27 minutes against me: https://www.chess.com/game/live/53231402341

And looking at his last couple of losses he stalled against someone yesterday for 21 minutes: https://www.chess.com/game/live/53090455351?username=sanad_libya

The most egregious was someone explicitly said in the chat, "accept draw or wait 20 minutes." Of course I reported him, but nothing seems to have ever happened to his account.

Anybody got any positive experience reporting stallers?

Members that habitually do that get placed in a poor sports pool.

Hmm thanks for the link. A special pool is a great idea, but that page only says, "If your account is flagged for habitually breaking this policy, your play will be restricted, requiring you to wait 5 minutes between games (including aborted games)."

I've had couple of people run the clock down in 30 min rapid, one I recall for about 16 mins and another over 20.

I didn't report at the time but will do so in the future.

Would you do that OTB? I don't think so.

SuperGak

some people just do it to be annoying

Hi,

You can report these users also

makes us wonder, if op often encounters stalling opponents, does that mean that op is actually in the poor sports pool himself. lol

That was the first thing I wondered too lol. But, no, first of all it doesn't happen a lot, it was just on my mind because it happened yesterday. You might have misunderstood because I referenced another game from that same person (not against me).

Also, I don't have the 5 minute delay between games that that page references, so I don't think my account is flagged. But who knows if that page is right, because it doesn't mention the "bad sport" pool at all.

I'd like to get clarification from chess.com, but you know, who cares about paying customers and all that right? I doubt they even read these forums.

That is a good point. I used to play 10 minute rapid, and I don't think I ever ran into a staller because.. well.. not sure you could tell anyway. 30 minute makes it really obvious if they stall 20+ minutes, and much more annoying.

I'd be interested in a mode where it's like... 30 minutes, but max of 5 minutes per move. Something like that. I guess 5 minutes with a 5 minute increment would be the same, but I doubt I'd get any matches with such an odd time control.

Just block them and you will never get a game with them again. I’ve reported someone and they got banned tho (probably not their first time stalling

Kowarenai

they try but for special arenas and events like arena kings or the global swiss championship

Wits-end

Yes, stalling can be annoying at times. I’ve had numerous life occurrences that pulled me away, there are more important events than a game. I remind myself of that and extend grace to the other person (in my mind anyway) not knowing the “why.”

I have taken long periods of time to accept or decline a draw or to resign.

At the Continental Open on Sunday, final round, one of the last games to finish, White was up 25 minutes to 5 minutes.

It was WKd2, WBe5, BKa2, BP's on d3, e2, and h3.

White thought about 10 minutes, played Bh2, Black instantly played ...Kb3, and White spent another 12 or 13 minutes before resigning.  Basically the Black King will walk around to g2.

Now if they are stalling in something easy like WRa1, WKf3, BKh2, that's different.

I mean, I don't start a game that I am not confident I can keep playing for double the clock time. That means, that I'm not going to be in a rush to finish, and if someone stalls me I'll simply browse TVTropes while checking the board now and then in case they try to sneak a move in and get my clock to run out instead.

That's life for you - there are always going to be people messing with you for whatever reason they have. Best to just take it in stride, keep calm, and carry on.

I just caught somebody stalling. The game link is https://www.chess.com/game/live/108872959167, and I hope they will be banned in a few minutes. The account could get closed minutes after reporting, a few days, or may not happen if there's not sufficient evidence of unfair play or the games are clean.

Neo_v23

I just had the opponent stalling. He was left only with a king and i had two queens. It took him 6 minutes to move his king 3-4 times.

I don't care that much about the 6 wasted minutes, it's just the motive behind his action. He knew he was defeated, so he stalled to take revenge. This is injustice, and since we try to make this world a better place, his ban would bring us closer to a just world.

All you do is report and block them and move on with your day. Keep it simple folks, it’s just a game.

In my opinion, stalling is just disrespectful and if you come across a staller, just do something else until they go. They are just wasting their own time.
