Personally I haven't come across a smug chess player yet.
On the contrary, I found that the better the player, the more humble.

I believe one of the biggest lessons chess teaches a person who spends time developing their skill is humility. We've all made terrible blunders even after a long thought, lost to legitimately weaker players, missed "obvious" moves, etc.
So up to a point I also see that trend. The stronger the player, in general, the more objective and humble. Of course there's always the odd jerk out of a group but from what I've seen that's more of the exception.
When you get to super-elite players (none of which play here by the way) I think they tend to have egos because while most of us have to deal with the fact that there exist players much much better, and usually much younger too, these top players know there are very few people who can give them a good game and were almost all GMs by age 13,14,15.
There is definitely "smugness" expressed by some players. I see it in highly rated bullet players most often, but it's still only a few players.
I'll second wafflemaster's humility comment. Sure, as far as the online chess ratings go, I'm pretty good. I also understand how utterly terrible I am at the game, in the grand scheme of things. I also remember how helpful it was to have a player stronger than myself help me out here and there, so I try to return that when I can.
It's interesting to see that there are some communities in which smugness is the norm, and it's very difficult to be the new guy, but in others, it's virtually nonexistent. Thankfully, this seems to be the latter.
Ok excellent, the score (?) is now 4 not smug to 1 smug, keep the opinions coming.
FYI: I am not counting planeden input.

i was merely trying to point out that oinquarki was being sarcastic and not smug. so i would have the poll at 4 - 0.

Good call; he doesn't even have a live rating!
Sweet, another 1 for not smug and 1 more for smug=5 to 2. And no not profit, but I might roll up the results and smoke them, that is all it's worth (for the moment that is). I am glad to see not smug is ahead. Feed me more!

You feed me if you get high off that! I'm tired of cleaning the bowl.
I was just wondering if there is a smugness among the higher rated chess players when dealing or playing the lower rated players? I haven't seen it or felt that but then I shy away from the real high rated players (thinking that there might be a superior-than-thou mindset). Perhaps this is indicative of life itself-those with the ratings (power) down play the players who don't. Is there snugness among this group?
This is really just a poll, as it were, to find out if this theory exist or has any validity.
