How I Feel About chess.com Servers Down & Disconnects

I've been trying to recover my chess rating and I'm playing in much better form now, but unfortunately my rating is dropping or barely moving at all because I keep getting disconnected or servers down mid-game. It balances out though, I've been on the better side of it and the worse side of it these last few days.

Apparently the server issues (502 Error) are happening frequently because of chess.com's increased traffic. They are doing their best by bringing in more resources to keep the servers up, but with now over 100 million members (amazing!) this is a challenging task. I am not thrilled with not advancing rating when I feel in good form, but being patient for their technical side is the least I can do.

How I feel inside about chess.com servers down and disconnects mid-game are sometimes:

When I'm winning and game gets cut out versus when I'm losing and the game gets cut out

Yeah, it happened to me, I thought I was alone because I do have some other problems with my Internet connection other than Chess. A player told me gioco dishonesto (dishonest game) like it's my fault he had to forfeit on time grin.

chess.com is usually really good about it when considering the size of their site, but lately it has been a challenging task to accommodate the surge of people joining the site; it is a good problem to have when you have "too many" people interested in chess though. I'm sure chess.com will get it running smoothly again. Just thought I'd give a humorous thread on it to lighten the mood happy.png

I think many of us are suffering the same problems - and I know from reporting my own issues that the developers of the site are working to recover on the issues and Chess.com staff will make restoration, including of ratings etc

Yes, now it is lagging too much and often I am seeing the 502 error

Chuck639

I wasn’t able to issue challenges or enter tournaments for a couple days and it magically fixed itself.

Alv25123

Yes. I keep seeing the error sign and have to keep reloading

Equaliser769

I doubt that - magic does not really work on tech issues !  That was the developers making things right more likely !

The important thing is to use the help button and report any and every bug. That means the developers can direct their efforts accordingly and with accuracy

It happened to me twice today, and one game was counted as a loss. I contacted support and I included screenshots of me trying to reconnect as evidence.

Here's the link to contact support in case anyone else needs it:

I just had a rapid match (10 min) and got a disconnect with like 8 min on the clock; I came back to 2:24 (or something) and had to bullet it through. I had never played bullet before, but man, that was a rush I had never experienced before. My opponent was so startled that I took up the challenge that he/she actually blundered the queen. When I won, I felt better than with all wins of non-disconnect games combined happy.png

Feeling the same thing here. I'm really not at a high rating, but still every game counts, and I've already gotten disconnected from multiple games. Honestly I thought it was a problem with just my system.

I'm playing in Chess Variants, unfortunately the server is a nightmare.
Countless times it restarts, lose games, crashes, freezes.
I hope they fix this because otherwise would be a great site!

Bullet chess is addictive.  Makes your dopamine levels go through the roof 😁

I try to think of it as everyone wins and loses by disconnects roughly equal, so it all balances out on its own naturally.

chess.com is a great site already; best chess site there is! ...but I will admit that the short-term issues aren't fun to deal with. chess.com is usually good with it though and I'm sure they'll get this problem solved as well.

They have the advantage that the chess fanbase will never fluctuate as crazy as in online videogames. I think in chess it's safe to invest in expanding.

ok that explains why i cant play bullet on this site

Do you think chess.com attracts more people because its colorful?

It doesn't fluctuate as much because videogames has new games coming out and updates constantly happening. The game evolves quickly and the fanbase fluctuates with it...

chess is a much older game and has been relatively stable and unchanged over literal centuries grin.png

I think chess.com attracts so many people because it is the best chess site out there happy.png and also because of the snowball effect of already being large. If chess as a game grows and people Google "chess" then chess.com is at the top and more likely people will signup there.
