Is there a way to see how many players are online right now on chess.com and how many games are going on?

batgirl

I counted seven but they keep moving so I can;t be sure.

great to see that there are some helpful and useful moderators around tho

batgirl

I'm here to moderate (hence the title), not hold your hand.

My ordinal rank, and percentage rank for Rapid implies that over 4 million people have played at least one game in the last 90 days.

Batgirl - the stats that give 379,000 playing includes all games in progress. Not just live games. Same for games today.

61,000 are not 3% but 0.3% - so if you're generous you get to 1.5% to 1.7% playing from time to time

People say hilarious things.  This ratio of 5:1 (1.5% to 0.3%) assumes the average amount of time an active member of chess.com spends on the site each week is about 34 hours!

In truth a small number of players spend hours on the site and a larger number spend a small amount of time on the site in an average day.

Checking the blitz stats, it appears around 4.4 million people are counted as active in this format. I think that means they have played in the last 3 months. This is the most popular chess format on the site.

From batgirl's post we can infer the average frequency of playing is a couple of games a week (the player numbers being dominated by players who play very little, and the game numbers by those who play a great deal).
