You should expect the fiercest competition you can imagine. I'm lower rated than you but every time I went to the WO, I was surprised at the level of my opponents' tenacity.
I wouldn't dream of giving you opening (etc.) advice. But I will give you some practical advice.
1) Pace yourself. Use your time wisely OTB.
2) Eat & sleep the best you can. Don't spend the wee hours playing skittles! You'll regret it the next day.
3) Choose a schedule you are comfortable with. Whether it's 4/day, 5/day keep in mind taking a 1/2 point bye in one or two rounds may keep you from being fatigued.
Good luck!
Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice on how to prepare for the world open coming up in July, 2013. I want to play in the under 2000 rated section, and want to perform/prepare the best that I possibly can. Right now I am reading "The Kaufman Reportoire for White and Black" by Larry Kaufman. I chose this book mostly since it addresses many queen pawn openings, which is my weaker opening choice. I've also stopped playing blitz games, and am trying to go play OTB games at my local chess club whenever I can. My current USCF rating is around 1926, and I do not believe myself to be all that weak of a player.
I guess what I am asking is what should I expect in a under 2000 rated section at a major tournament?
Sincerely,
Alex
