Is this cheating?

I spent months training and watching the engine on this website against bots then observing the engine’s moves. From there, I learned when to trade pieces. I was also taught to look for checks and attacks. I also play games with a chessboard next to me to find what I think would be the best move. So just now I came second in a rapid tournament. People said that I was using an engine while playing. Is my way of studying misunderstandable?

Use of an analysis board during live games, even without an engine, is considered cheating.
