Lack of Respect Between Opponents All Over Chess.com!

Why is there often such a lack of respect between opponents on Chess.com or in online chess in general?  I personally have not encountered it myself (with the exception of one cheating accusation several years ago) but from reading several forums or just seeing the forum titles I notice this disrespect is rampant here on Chess.com.

I personally feel there is no place for trash talk (let alone harsher abuse) on Chess.com, in chess or in any form of competition.  I always respect my opponent, no matter how much lower or higher they may be rated.

That doesn't mean though I'm not all for chess for blood.  One can play like their life depends on it yet still respect their opponent.  And if one chooses not to send a positive message in the chat then silence is fine.  But nothing disrespectful!

I find with this attitude the game to be much more enjoyable.  There is no need to take down the ego of your opponent.  Yet at the same time there is nothing like (silently) building up your own!

Please respect your opponent.  Something to think about and consider guys.  Chess.com will be much better off for it.  And so will you.

Abit of friendly banter is ok. Mind games. But abuse, name calling, stalling, stupid draw offers and cheating are all wrong. I have played a few players who were cheating but never knew who. I’ve had repeated draw offers from idiots on occasion. But have had very few instances of abuse or name calling. I wonder if it’s more prevalent in the longer game formats ?

As long as the trash talk is friendly and both are in on it I have no problem with that.  It just personally doesn't suit me.

And this is not because I don't want to be the recipient of trash talking, abuse or disrespect.  I'm extremely thick skinned and it really goes in one ear and out the other.  But I can never know how it will affect my opponent if it is me doing the talking so I choose to avoid it.  And even if I know my opponent and know they can handle it I am so used to not engaging in it that I don't even bother.

I never start a conversation. I only play 5 mins or under so time talking is time away from playing and thinking. But if it’s good natured I try and respond. And like to chuck in a lucky boy at the end if I draw or lose when appropriate!

This might be a case of the loud minority. I literally just joined but everyone has been super friendly so far.

I am in complete agreement with you. In a world that seems to take quick offense at each perceived act of disrespect, some lack the ability to extend respect. Lead the way!

@TheHarbingerOfDoom - I agree with you as well.  When the humor and timing is appropriate, why not?

If the OP has not personally experienced it as he claims -

who is he to complain?

Taking the word of whiners and diners ...

foolish trolling.

Did I hear the word "trolling?" That is what I am here for! wink.png

Why does it have to be about me?  Can't someone show concern for others?  It disappoints me to see disrespect all over this site and has no correlation with how I'm treated.  My main concern here is for the betterment of the site.

Appreciate the input.  Thanks.

I wouldn’t worry about what the bishop says. Think he’s got some negativity issues.

Relax badbishop. Your ruining the aura in here!

That's okay.  I appreciate the negative input.  It helps for demonstration purposes.happy.png

I don't know... I recently logged on to the really old server FICS. I played a guy, and after the game he was curing and calling me names, and I did the same back to him, and after a little bit of this we both stopped. And it reminded me of the good old days...

... ok so they weren't good days, but I did get a sense of nostalgia.

Chess.com is super tame by comparison... at least I've never come across any really nasty people. I guess because chess.com mutes you for it.

Anonymity brings out the worst in a lot of people.  This web site is no exception.  IRL hardly no one would insult without filter while playing chess.

Regarding chess.com, this is one of the best moderation I've ever seen on the internet, enforcing, muting and banning unsportsman like conduct.  Normally you just need to get a "thicker skin" which I'll admit, I'm horrible at since no one in real life insults me (because I'm a large ogre), leaving me vulnerable to any multiplayer game banter.  But, here, I have not seen hardly any harassment. When it does happen, report and if it's justified, there are consequences, which is the key ingredient.

I agree, mods do a good job here.

Win or lose, you should at least type "gg" after it is over.

llama47

Yeah, at least in speed chess (blitz and bullet) players don't usually say gg.

Maybe because they understand 1 speed game doesn't mean much. Anyone can lose or win a single game. Players are more interested in how they do in 10 or 100 games that day.

If I play someone many games in a row (which is rare) I'll be polite and communicate if I need to go soon, or if it's the last game, or if I'm happy or frustrated about our previous game, and thank them for the games at the end... but if it's just one game then common practice is I ignore them and they ignore me.

canadian_rt

I don't type anything cause there's always someone who will scream at you for being "sarcastic." However if you don't type anything, some people will call you rude. Well then, turn off chat, right? Nope, there's another forum about how people think that's rude. There's  no middle ground. Just click next game as quickly as possible...

the best way to release the tension is to say GG after the game
