Maybe you were too much in a hurry and double ticked or something ... anyway, I hope your girl is ok - that's much more important, ain't it?
Loss on time on Vacation?

Heh, yeah, that came across as a bit dramatic.
Just a twisted ankle, nothing serious. All is good, though thanks for asking.
End of the world at the time of course though.
Gutted about the game still.

I had 6 hours left in a 1 day per move game and had to rush my gf to hospital.
I went into Online Settings, ticked the Vacation button (11 days left) and saved preferences, and come back to find I lost my game (which was pretty even, so its not like I was avoiding mate in 3) on time.
Unless something has changed, basic members are not allowed to go on vacation when it is their turn in any games. I suppose you should have seen a message to that effect when you tried. Did you have to turn off vacation when you came back?
One way to get around this, for non-tournament games, is for everyone to uncheck Auto-Win on Time here http://www.chess.com/home/echess_settings.html
It gives at least 60 days extra for each move, probably 90 days, do not recall exactly. If you do so, your opponents will not have the same problem.

No I never saw that warning when I did it, though I was rushing, just got a pop up that said:
"I confirm that this is legitimate vacation time. I understand that if I go on vacation to extend the time of a game that is completely and hopelessly lost, that game may be adjudicated and ended early by Chess.com Staff. I also understand that vacation abuse may lead to a warning or account closure."
Which seemed to be a confirmation message of my vacation setting, so I clicked ok, shut down the PC and off we went.
The warning about vacation when its my turn should have been included in that text if that's the case.
So if I set this Auto-Win on time, I can still lose on time but my opponents can't?

1. Could basic members jump in here to confirm whether vacation can be turned on while it is your turn in a game. Otherwise it could just be a mis-click situation.
2. You cannot control your opponent's Auto-Win on Time setting to give yourself extra time. If you unset Auto-Win on Time on your own account, opponents will benefit by not losing on time for some large number of days. This cooperation thing is a strange concept. There are courses for employers to send people on. Think of it this way, you will benefit by being able to finish a possibly interesting game.

From this it appears basic members can turn on vacation at any time since there is no mention of the issue of "your turn".

"It is very Important you remember to save the settings changes by clicking "Save Preferences" at the bottom of that page before closing or leaving that window otherwise any changes you made won't happen."
