I suggest making friends with a couple of high-rated players (1600 is high for me) and playing them often.

Welcome to the site! You're going to have lots of fun here. I would suggest, also, to seek out some higher rated players to play, but offer to play them unrated. Higher rated players seldom want to risk rating points against low rated or unknown players.

Your best bet is just to leap in and start. HOWEVER, as a novice you should be playing long games--preferably online games at 3 days per move. Too many new players here get addicted to blitz games, and after several thousand games they are still terrible players! Slow games are the way to go until you've developed your skills.
