New to this site. How do I play a game with myself?

Hi, I am attempting to learn how to use the chess.com site. I would like to be able to pick an opening and then go through the various variations. But, I do not know how to get the pieces to move when in this mode? So, how do I choose a next move and how do I cause that move to be displayed?

Thank You

Tom

Tonya_Harding, I have asked questions of a number of forums over the years, mostly involving mathematics, engineering and programming, but I have never been replied to in such a fashion until now. I asked a legitimate, honest question, and you replied rudely. I imagine that your reply is against site policy.

Tom you can visit this link  https://support.chess.com/article/360-how-do-i-start-a-game

HmMmMmM but your account was only created in June? So you have alts? Or you had a previous account? Anyway, this is a chess site, so you shouldn't be asking questions involving mathematics, engineering and programming.

If you want to practise an opening, the opening explorer/database is useful; you can "play" with yourself and also see master games.

That’s what I find soooo exciting about these forums, a simple question can quickly turn into a war zone ! Lol 😂

If you go to play with the computer, there's an option to play with another person instead of the computer (in android at least), so you just play both players' moves

Love the hints that have been dropped for how to find it but not actually saying specifically where to find it. Awesome.

Gosh, you guys are rude.  Go to chess.com/live, click on the type of game, scroll down, and select "analysis board."  That's what you're looking for.  Hope it helps.  happy.png

I've got a watch and a clock, all set and perfectly working. But I'm lazy and will ask you what time it is instead of looking at my clocks. And that's what? Supposed to be "polite"???

If the watch is set to something the user has never seen before (roman numerals or something idk), then yes, the user may need assistance figuring out how to user their new watch.  Not everybody is tech savvy.  Some are just downright tech dinos.  Whatever the case, when someone needs help, we assume the best, help them, and don't comment anything that might hurt them, since we don't know the position that they're coming from and why they need help, even if it seems obvious to us.

Whatever, finding the "analyse" button is simple.

Sure, if you want to analyze a game. If you want to analyze something without beginning from a previous game, it's not always easy.  To assume everyone has the same skills as you have is just an example of pride, and it hurts people.  There's no need to hurt people, so how long would it seriously take to just write a sentence helping them and move on?  It's not a great burden to help someone by just telling them.

Yes, I agree. If someone doesn't want to help, then they shouldn't answer these questions.

Also, @miner_tom

as you are a gold member, you have the explorer feature. Hover your cursor over learn, then click explorer, you will be able to make opening moves and see them there, as well as the most popular moves played in master games.

To help learning is better than fake help that encourage laziness. I'll unfollow now, Have it all your way and see where it takes you.

Just remaining silent when you have nothing to offer is even better.

Exactly ! 👍

Analysis board is not available on the mobile app and if the OP has only experienced Chess.com via the app, that is perhaps why they asked.
