New Training Feature: Practice

Sort:
DeepGreene

Today, we're happy to fully release a new training feature called Practice! You can find it at chess.com/practice - or in the Puzzles section of the navigation, where Drills used to be.

What's it do? ...Glad you asked! The Practice feature supports your chess training by providing a flexible Computer training partner whenever you need one! While Play Vs Computer simulates a real-life game experience, Practice is a more of a study tool. How you use it is entirely up to you. Configure the coaching features to be as helpful or hands-off as you wish, experiment with different Bots/engine levels, even switch sides at any time as you play!

Practice Options

✅ Drills & Custom Positions

Like Drills before it, Practice includes a collection of instructive positions for you to practice against. Jump into the action of a great game from history, select an Opening position to study, or train on dozens of important chess techniques that can mean the difference between winning (or at least saving the draw) and losing when you needn't have.

Practice Positions

Positions you've practiced (even a little) are marked with a check. (You can clear this history if you wish, by visiting your Puzzle settings.)

🎯 Practice Everywhere

Of course, there are lots of places around the site to find interesting positions to practice! We reworked "Finish vs" links (i.e. in completed games) and added some other links around the site to help bring positions to the new Practice interface. See a position you think is interesting? Practice it!

All features lead to Practice...

That's pretty much it! We hope you enjoy using this new feature to practice key drills and experiment with interesting positions of your own! Please do use the "?" at the lower left of the page to "Report a Bug" if you find any, or "Make a Suggestion" if you like. Or let us know what you think in the Comments. Thank you!

@DeepeGreene How can I get to old drill section? In new one there are severeal features missing.

Cauchy-Heine

New practice doesn't have: checkmates, advantages, odds and old master games

Michael_Ska

Why did you remove the ability to take back moves though?

Jaguar000777

Thanks for your reply.  I'm still not sure how to get around my issue.  When I go into practice (since finish vs computer is not available), after I make a move it will still not let me take it back now (like when playing vs computer, and like we have been able to do when playing a game from a starting point in analysis.  Is there a setting for that?  I clicked on the assistance setting icon in practice mode and did not see anything for that.

I am sure they will fix this, is too obvious an issue.  I would hope so at least.

normack77

This is very helpful, thanks..!

No longer being able to take back a move is terrible for practice.  It's essential if you play around finishing games at various points like I do.  Surely that feature can be restored?  That change was truly not well considered or thought out.

DeepGreene

Thanks, guys! We are fixing the issue with take-backs!

RobertJames_Fisher

Yes, you used to have to go to lichess.org and play in an opening position
