Newbie Here...Won 2 games & lost both

It has been a long time since I played and I was happy to run across this site.   Played 2 games so far.  Lost the first one with a winning position when the other player simply stopped playing.  Was on a 2 hour game & I withdrew.   Then I had a certain win when my internet balked.  Had plenty of time left, but the system decided that I had left & when I got back my Q & K & 3 pawns had lost to his K & 2 pawns.

I can understand the first loss, but is it an auto-loss when your server hickups for games on this site?

Not that important, just curious.   Looking forward to playing some.

Tim: what kind of Internet connection are you using?

wireless high speed

the "wireless" might be part of the problem. if you occassionally drop connection, even for just a few seconds, it can cause you to lose time without you knowing it. i think most of us don't realize how impersistent our connections are until we drop them...

try plugging in for a bit and seeing if it happens again?

thanks for the feedback Erik.

Consider playing in a "slow" chess game, which is essentially correspondence chess. Than you won't have to worry about your connection...

I looked at the first game that you decribed as having a winning position...here is the position:

Perhaps you are correct...what is it ab out this position that makes you say it is winning for white?

The "slow" game was, as I recall, well under 1/2 of the time we'd committed to when the other bloke left.   If you commit to a 2 hour game, or whatever the chosen time is, then leaving after 35 minutes (or whatever) due to "slowness" seems pretty frigg'n rude.   If I felt that way, I'd at least let the other guy know...

Didn't know positions can be recalled on this site, cool.  You are in retrospect correct to question the description "winning position".   The statement was apparently an incorrect impression I had at the time.  Clearly an exageration as I look at it again.
