I'm pretty sure I recall reading somewhere around that the site was started in 2007.

Yep, the site went live in May of 2007. You can read an early blog by erik on how the site got started. If look through his content he has a number of blog entries about it.
I'm not sure what you mean by an earlier version of this site. Then again I was blacked out for a lot of it.
