I've only disabled chat twice. It was last week when I was playing a particular opponent in an online tournament. He did exactly as you described your opponent (different people, I checked). Mine also had this weird thing where he would comment that he sees me on chess.com, so he expects that I would be responding promptly to his every move. I have an average of one hour, nine minute response time on my online games; excuse me for hitting the forums. I turned off chat and prolonged my moves against him by several hours; even when he conditional moved on me.
I like to use the "disable chat" feature on live chess after experiencing a few lame remarks on the part of my opponent, but I forgot to disable the online chat. My opponent remarked that my moves were too slow. Well, that is why there is a time control. Take too long: lose the game. I frequently do. Still, it is a part of winning at Chess to be able to move with discipline in a certain time frame.
What calm and serene games I have had since disabling chat on live Chess.
Imagine my consternation when an online opponent got on my case for the same thing, using multiple punctuation marks to make his point!!!!???? He seemed to think that I should be moving several times a day, and was very impatient with me for taking my time!!!!!???!!!?! I try to move once a day with online games.
He also spelled you: "u."
I reminded him it was a three day time control. Now why complain about the time control when u yourself accepted the terms of the game????!!!~??! There, I used multiple punctuation marks. Well, it does provide some relief.
Then, tonight I ran across a live opponent who seemed to be trying to wait me out. He let 13 minutes tick down on the 15 min clock and then made a move. Meanwhile I'm sitting around on my laptop reading the news thinking "This sucks." Reverse problem I guess, but with this guy it seemed like a scam. The move was a given and nothing genius emerged after this long interim. My point? Eliminate the chat!!!!???...,,!!
