"I've got to go. Let's call it a draw."

I've been confronted with this request quite a bit -enough to make it annoying and to bring it up here.  There's a pattern:

-- The draw-seeker usually gets petulant and persistent if the request is denied.

-- Is always dead-lost.  No one has ever used the "I-gotta-go" line with me in a winning or even position.

My feeling is that if you gotta go, why'd you start the game in the first place?  True,  emergencies do happen, but now when someone pleads "Gimme a draw. I gotta go,"  I want to reply "Take your computer to the bathroom with you."

 Any thoughts about this?

id say it depends on the state of the game.
If it hasnt past say move 10 ill probably give them a draw, unless theyre like 200+ points lower than me.
or if its a drawn position, otherwise its ust bad luck  for them.

Casual_Joe

I think it'd be perfectly reasonable for you to respond with "sorry -- I feel I have a better position".

InfiniteFlash

well, as long as the game doesn't negatively impact my rating, im all for agreeing to a draw in such a situation when the position is dead =

DrFrank124c

they have all kinds of excuses. curse them out and then switch off the chat.

I have lost in better positions because I had to leave in the middle of a game and couldn't make it back in time. But I can imagine that probably over 90% of the time when someone says they gotta go it's just an excuse (especially when they're in worse positions), and should just be ignored.

If it's really true, say: "I gotta go, my apologies" or something. If they offer a draw, fine. If not, don't bug them.

I have sometimes started a game during my study hall at school, but I just type, "I gotta go." and resign.  I think that it is my own fault for starting a game i am unable to finish, so I should suffer the consequences.

I think it's just common courtesy never to make a request like that unless you're at least a piece up.  If I've lost interest in a game or something more important is going on, I'll offer a draw so I don't lose on time--it's better to get half a point than forget or procrastinate until your flag falls.

And, if the draw is rejected, you either have to bite the bullet and fight it out or hit the resign button.  If you've really got to go, just hit the button and go -- that's what it's there for.  If you're really that daunted by the hit to your record or your rating, you need to play harder opponents and lose more often.

trysts

If I'm no doubt winning, then I deny that familiar request(and that is the most typical request from my opponents that I have seen). Otherwise, I am willing to give a draw in what I evaluate as an even position, if my opponent requests to leave.

I'd say no and just mock them / laugh if they didn't take the hint.
