Ratings increase consistency?

Just a question that I hope someone from Chess.com who really understands the Glicko system can breifly comment on.  I basically get the principle that as you play more games the rating computer reduces uncertainty as to your rating and so you have smaller steps - makes sense to me.... BUT

Two recent results mystified me a little. I am currently rated 1540 - 1550s having played about 120 games.

A win against 1694 rating increased my rating 10 points 1540 to 1550 - OK so far

5 days and 3 results later (2 wins and a loss) a win againts 1918 rating only earned me 13 rating points - 1546 to 1559.

Now I was pretty pleased with both these wins - but I would have expected the difference between beating a player rated 350 points higher would have gained more than 30% extra points to beating someone 150 points higher??

Not a complaint - just interested - here to learn on all counts.

Cheers,

Andrew

The Glicko system contains built-in measures to automatically adjust the speed of rating adjustments.

New players who have not played many games will not only tend to have bigger rating changes themselves, but also their opponent's rating will change less.

Players with a more established rating, who have played many games in the last couple of days or months, will tend to have smaller rating changes themselves and at the same time, they will have a somewhat larger impact on their opponent's rating.

In your example, it seems to me that your 1918 opponent may have been quite new to the rating pool, while your 1694 opponent may have been having a somewhat more established rating, for example.

@ilmago - Aha you are absolutely correct. Mystery solved - thanks a bundle - I hadnt realised that the opponent's uncertainty also impacted my rating change. And checking it out his rating went down by 40 points in the loss to me. All good!

Hi,

This interesting topic is anwered greatly. I gain knowledge as well.

Congratulation for my fellow aussie friend, for beating 1918 player. Seems that you will soon reach 1900s range.

Cheers,
