Reporting opponents for abandoning

Is it ok to report opponents who abandon games instead of resigning, or is it considered frivolous? It's a little petty of me to report them, I'll happily admit that, but c'mon, abandoning a game is rude. I just don't want to get done for wasting site mods' time.

It is possible in the report list under "quitting." You can also block players. Fair players resign.

If ppl stall for like 10 minutes sure, but if they abandon a blitz game u just gotta wait like 10 seconds right?

No, I think that's a bit much. You don't know their circumstances. I've accidentally 'abandoned' a game occasionally, once because my internet died, once because I had vertigo, zigzagged off to get some inner ear meds and thought I had resigned but the game was still live.

mercatorproject

If you are a chronic abandoner, there are consequences.

Report them if you think you should do so. But, do not expect anything like immediate results. I think the site takes it seriously enough to give some sort of punishment, or at least a rap over the knuckles.

Rimuru

It says for you after clicking the report button, "Stalling / Quitting Games" as a reason. So pretty sure it is okay.

Correct. The payoff is pretty slow, as it is not as clearcut as Cheating as there are plausible excuses. Has to be chronic, like serial.

So, thinking about it, reporting seems to build the case. If no-one reports, they will just keep getting away with it.

Tbf piedraven you're right, but my connection always drops out for me when I'm in a winning position 😭 ... It's a bit suss when someone abandons the moment they're in a lost position 🫤 (And I only play 10 minute games atm - I'm a *terrible* blitz player, Ash03053). Thank you for all the replies though, I do feel a little reassured/affirmed.

piedraven

Yeah, I've legitimately just had accidents. I thought I had hit the resign button.

If there are no sanctions for misdemeanours, there are no reasons for anybody not to behave in a totally selfish, disrespectful and dishonourable manner, because they can do so with impunity.

Contemporary Canadian society is an example of this.

It’s rude, but not worth reporting. Stalling’s different. I report that.
calbitt5750
But, as whiteknight reminds us, Canadians must be treated severely or they will create chaos. It’s just their nature.

you have to deal with it

Report both stalling (much more annoying) and quitting games. If chess.com programmers have done this properly, both will keep accumulating for a player and they should get some penalty after sufficient number of counts. Quitting and stalling also skews the site stats. More games "won by abandonment" or "on time" instead of say checkmate etc.

I have a feeling the people saying things along the lines of "dEaL WiTh iT LoL" are likely to be the ones with the least manners in a game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

piedraven

Yall couldn't...maybe give people the benefit of the doubt?

I accidentally did this once. Had a vertigo attack, zigzagged off to the bathroom to get meds from the cabinet, thought I had resigned, but the game was still live.

GenarHofoen

Funny thing is Caracticus, by your standards, there's far more important things for you to worry about than some random thread about manners on the chess.com forums. And yet here you are, making multiple posts.
