tags are inclusive, not unique. so a tactic could be a beautiful pin, and a fork, and be checkmate in 2. it would appear in all of those buckets. so in the future you will be able to choose to study only certain kinds. or get a report where you are strong/weak.
Tactics Trainer tags

Voting on tags is for premium members only. Anybody can see the tags voted up for a particular problem.
I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way, but the tactics trainer has all these new tags and yet almost none of them seem to be used/suggested. If the tactic leads to checkmate, the tactic is invariably tagged "Mate in X" even if the tactic really is about exploiting a pin or setting up a mating net. It seems to me that the pin is what's important, the number of moves to mate is secondary. Recognizing the actual pattern is much more important than counting. Is there any way to favor tags other than the moves 'til mate tag? I'd like a system where I could search for "pin" or "castled king" tactics, but this will never happen if people always use the generic tag.
I think what's happening is, most people aren't bothering to vote on tags. But there are a few people who are putting in the fairly obvious mate in X tags whenever the tactic results in checkmate. Which is better than nothing, but we aren't going to get the full value out of the tags that way. (And it also leads to problems being tagged mate in 3+ when it never actually was mate in 3+ since the opposing side had a move that would have saved checkmate but dropped material.)
I've been trying to tag the problems I come across with something beyond the checkmate. Unless it's mate in 1, there's almost always SOME other tactic being used.

Couple of points...
First, the "Mate in X" tags were added programmatically... If the problem ends in mate after X moves, that tag WILL be there, and we didn't rely on any member-voting to get those in place.
Second, the vote score currently required to make a given tag "official" (i.e. visible) for a given problem is perhaps a little high. We already have plans to "lower the standard" (basically putting more trust in the members) very soon, which would make literally thousands of member-voted problem-tag pairs visible instantly.
In the meantime, PLEASE keep voting! I realize it would be more fun if the system was more (obviously) responsive - but every vote counts, and when we do get some time to adjust the behavior, your past votes will have immediate effect!
Thanks
i would like to add a tag catagory that is something like "wow, didn't see that coming" or "who really solves these?".

I wish the tags wouldn't pop up after the first fail on a tactics problem. Often I want to "try again" but the hints they provide make the second chance too easy.

There is a check-box in your Tactics settings you can use if you don't want to see the tags. It's all or nothing though, so if you want to see them later on (reviewing your history maybe), you'll have to re-enable them.

@staff
I've just done Problem N°0151584
I've done it right but the Tag is "Mate in 3". Now, final result of this tactics training is not mate in 3, since this is no mate here.

The tag is "Mate in 3+". Since at the end of the problem mate is unavoidable, it's still appropriate.

Is there any chance of adding 'en passant' , and 'double check' to the list of tactics trainer tags ?

Those seem useful. I'll enter a ticket. Thanks!

I've been wondering what the tags are useful for. Seeing them before solving the problem would make it too easy, and seeing them after the problem has already been studied doesn't provide much benefit. Going down the list to decide on appropriate tags really slows things down. It would be cool if at some point Chess.com would add the option to allow users to specify they work on certain types of problems, for example, to be able to check a box that says I only want to work on end game problems today.

Totally! Tag-defined performance reports and tag-enabled customized tactics sessions were always part of the plan... We just need to GET to it. SO much to do! It's coming though - so please keep tagging those tactics! :)
