The New League System

I like the new League system. It seems that people can advance merely by playing a lot of games so the emphasis is on quantity rather than quality. League ranking thus isn’t indicative of playing ability. I wonder if they can make some modification to change this.

You have to win a lot of rated games, not just play them.

This week you made it to a Silver division by winning the second most games in your Bronze division. It looks like you won at least one blitz arena.

This week, you would have to surpass 45 of the 50 to continue.  They all probably scored at least 1,000 points to advance to Silver.

After day one, you have 0 points.

Are you giving up?

No, I enjoy the leagues. But the 1100 rated guy that progressed to silver by winning the division I believe amassed 3,800 points . The more games you play the more you can win. So if I were to sit and play around the clock for a week I would surely progress, but it isn't important to me. The first week I didn't even know they had initiated the league and won my stone division with only 680 points or so. I do like the arena emphasis because it mixes things up with many different abilities and types of players. Many players care about their rating number and in a blitz arena one is going to be defeated by some lower ranked person and lose lots of points, especially when there isn't any time increment. So it is a good thing to promote participation in arenas, and I have seen many more excellent players there. I just wish they had a quality aspect to promotion, not just playing a million games. I am not going to bother protecting my points anymore when there really is neither honor nor accomplishment in it. Also, I wonder if one plays a lot of 3 min. games one will amass more points that someone who plays 15 min.

If someone is playing Rapid, 10|0 is probably going to be most similar to blitz, assuming you don't get a lot of opponents using all their time.

The league system appears to have given the arenas a big boost which is a welcome development. I have never seen so many good players show up. So I guess all this will work out well in the end because it is getting harder to win consistently in the arenas.

After saying I wouldn't get involved in the League mania I noticed that from regular playing I was 11th in the Silver League. It snowed Sunday so I played eight hours nonstop and made fourth, advancing to the Crystal. If I had a bad position I just resigned and crammed more games in. I even played some 2/1 bullet games at which I am terrible. So that is the end of quantity over quality.

I was into it at first but now I don't really care about leagues anymore

this site is very unfair how they do things! for instance im a 1400 rated playerwhen i started  and got bumped back down to about 900 and have been there for about 3 weeks and everytime i get back to 1000 i lose at least 5 or 6 games to people rated lower than me and that is bull crap if they would make everybody that joins this site start at the same rating it would nock out all the vwery advanced players that join and say they are begginniners  you can tell a beginner from advanced this site has gone down hill fast

and the new leageu is not no better by the time it starts   im always 4 or 5 hundred points behindbecouse the dont tell you it started very un fair

I believe it starts at 3:00 EST Sunday when the previous one ends. I don't play much Sunday and also started 400 points behind. A I said, all quantity no quality but fun.

Is there a way to get out of the players league? I find it a very annoying system

theres an option -> "Leave League" once you go to your division
And i like the new league thing but it's annoying because i keep wanting to win and win and the disappointment i get after i lose is just way too much pressure for me

I am amazed that in my division of the Crystal League a couple of the leaders had amassed roughly 1,400 points within 24 hours. How is that possible? They must have played 20 hours! Unbelievable.

You choose a skill level when joining that gives you a default initial rating. It doesn't really matter what you choose, since the Glicko rating system will quickly get you to something more in line with your actual rating within the playing pool.

That's correct.

12 pm Pacific time (8 pm UTC).

That isn't the site's fault at all. You are responsible for holding the  rating that you chose. Possibly you are used to certain other sites where the rating is inflated roughly 200 points. The rating system is tougher here but that makes it more of challenge. You will notice that there are a lot of Fide or UFATF players here playing at ratings below what they are there. So no worries and a rating is just a number.

I wouldn't encourage opting out as the League system is fun. Just don't think about it and who knows, you may ultimately like it.

I don't remember signing up for the leagues. How do I opt out?

It was something they started automatically several weeks ago. They did have a notice prefacing the Leagues and explaining how it would work. Give it a chance--you may come to enjoy it.

You can click on the league badge on your profile/homepage, or the trophy on your mini-profile popup and then the Leave League on that page.
