The New Look of Tactics Trainer

Hi Bmws88.
Glad to hear your son is playing.
He has to be a pretty young player!
I wanted to make a comment on the accuracy thing though. As a parent we know about patience and the amount of time we try to repeat things to our kids over and over and over and... anway You get the point.
The point of tactics and playing is experience. LOTS AND LOTS of it. patience and focus is a developmental issue and will improve as he gets older. My advice is to let him go through the puzzles at the rate he wants anything is better than nothing. He is actually learning a lot of patterns by exposure. Think of it like flash cards. The key is repetition not focus on 1 problem. 2x2? do you know it? 3 , 2, 1,... no answer 4! and move on! rinse and repeat! trust me on this one :) You can use other sites where they have a larger base of tactics if you want. Chessmagnet school is also great because you can reset the puzzles. If you have chessbase or a database program let me know in a message and I can send you a file or 10 with simple tactics.
A little story,... The k-1 national champion 2 years ago was a kindergartener. A really talented kid but well like any 5 year old the focus of a gnat. what he did though was love to play chess. He would pester his parents to play , his brother to play , the cat... anyway. One afternoon he was pestering his family to play and they told him to go play the computer so he set up chessmaster and put it on the easy level and played in 2-3 hours,... 180 games!!! no joke! just banging them out. I thought about this and based on my knowledge of brain development. This taught him probably one of the most important things in chess, board vision! He saw hanging pieces and grabbed stuff that was free, learned simple tactical motifs and to LOOK around the board. He did this often and the experience has paid off. While his rating isnt crazy high right now he is on the top list (he has soem problems playing people lower rated while he regularly beats 1600 players and has beaten 1800-1900 players he is 7 after all, he had a 1800 standard rating on ICC until he dumped it because he didnt want to make his big brother feel bad)
My point is exposure is soooo important right now, anything, everything is good.

More data is embedded in the new look which I guess is fine even though I don't know how much I want to be obsessed with my tactics rating. One thing that seems to be missing from the new training is that I can't find my all time percentage for correctly solving the problems. Statistic for a recent time frame is availabel but all time seems missing. I am trying to train my son to hit accuracy rather than time or rating because he always rushes them and in a tournament game, he always has 2/3 of the time unused before he loses or wins.
We'll be bringing that information back to the Tactics Home page shortly!
In the meantime, it's still visible from your profile page; just click on the Tactics area in your Ratings list at the right.

Thanks baddogno and deepgreene. TonyH, thanks for the long comments and advice. My son's is 7 also and not K-1 national champion good but also pretty good, and much better than me. Maybe the massive number of exercises will help but I strongly felt that his playing strength dropped noticeably in past two months because of the large number of puzzles he blazed through. How do you know so much about this K-1 champion? I am curious if he really did all this on his own--it sounds he is from a chess family.
