i think bobby fisher went mad because he took too much time studying chess and getting better all the time and of a sudden he became famous in the chess world so he got excited because he was so famous and he couldn't control himself when he won the 1973 world open that's at least wht i think because it seems when he got mad was when he was a teen

mike345677433

and i acutally think if he wasn't that good he wouldn't of been so bad because if he was a bad person he would of started to act angry when he was real little that's usally how it goes you don't get mad all of a sudden when you are teen normally unless you are popular

he kinda remins me of oj simpson a little

Even with punctuation there's no way you can say Fischer won the 1973 World Open. He dropped out of play for 20 years after 1972.

I won the 1973 World Open - there's nobody can touch me when it comes to 'beer-fishing' Laughing

I could be wrong here, but I am fairly certain Bobby 'went mad' due to many reasons you fail to mention in your post. There are loads of chess players that devote their lives to memorizing seemingly endless lines of theory, and they get/got on in life just fine.

Skwerly

I see you are quite the "Fisher" expert!  You must be really into the guy!  You are the only one who knew his secret real last name!

The rest of us think it was "Fischer".  How silly!

mike345677433

no skwerly i'm not really the fisher expert i never explored his games it's just by some of his videos it looks like he went mad when he got really good at chess and got a lot of attention by his fans

The guy was totally normal... He just didn't want to play anymore, that's all. He wasn't wierd or anything... I think he had it's reasons not to play (Maybe he was scared to loose but even if he was that doesn't make him mad). I suppose the real madness was that jew stuff... Some people say the holocaust didn't happen, I don't know about that. And maybe he had it's reasons to be against the U.S. too, I wouldn't be surprised, lots and lots of people are the same. I don't think there's anything "mad" about him. Except for the talking bad about jews thing, but I don't think about that. He died a millionaire, I bet he was happy. And maybe the russians were out to get him before the '72 match, who knows?

well at least i think this is what i think happened

I like this post.

He got went mad because he couldn't acept the fact that the younger generation were getting better than he. NM Mike Petersen says that he's a sore loser and pittiful creature. Kasparov wasn't much better.

Bobby Fischer was a chess genius as well as a paranoid megalomaniac.  If one reads about his personal history, Fischer was living in his own world bordered by 64 squares.  Ironically, he died at the age of 64.  He was a boon to U.S. Chess because he sparked an interest to many Americans oblivious to the royal game.  Unfortunately, his constant and unresonable demands to defend his title in 1975 led to his demise and a fallout to chess in the U.S.

he couldnt beat the next generation??how does this make any sense? in '71 he had one of the best hot-streaks ever, and then won the WC the next year. nobody could touch him back then. it was his constant paranoia that attributed partially to fall, which was seen ever since he was younger.

seems to me after he won the WC he had no desire to ever defend the crown again. many years after he quit he would talk about himself like he still was the champion (which can be seen in many interviews)

so he didnt really quit in 75 but insted in 72. 3 years later he pushed for unfair conditions on purpose so there would be no match. very unfortunate for karpov

Fischer went mad because his narcissism made it nearly impossible for him to come to terms with the fact that his genius meant nothing outside of chess circles, which is about 99.9% of society, where he was perceived as an idiot at worst and an idiot savant at best.

Life is supposed to be a balance of career , recreation, family, and community.

If your sense of identity and self-worth is driven by what you do, rather than who you are, you will crash and burn. OJ Simpson (noted above), Michael Jackson, Elvis, Janis Joplin (I was so sad when she died, we will never hear a voice like hers again). All these people had talent, riches, adulation, everything that all of us would desire, yet their entire sense of self-worth  so was wrapped up in their own self image that when they failed - as they thought - they believed that they were worthless.

The list of people who are rich, talented, intelligent, and who screw it all up is apparently endless. You might be the best chess player, hockey player, actor, singer, dentist, computer programmer, engineer, doctor, whatever in the world, but without a balanced approach to life you are at serious risk of crashing and burning.

Not that I know the answer to all of this. I just know that you have to maintain balance.

Don't know, but to me that's the simplest explanation.

(A side note--he did go by "Fisher" at one point in his life.)

In his radio interviews out of all the crazy things he said he never said anything about people monitoring his thoughts. Where did you hear that?

By the way, I don't think he had paranoid schizophrenia. More like narcissistic and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder with paranoid features.

John Carlin, in an article titled “The End Game of Bobby Fischer” in the Observer/Guardian (February 10, 2008), described Fischer, during his final years, as looking like a homeless bum. “His teeth were rotten, and his white hair and beard were long and unkempt.” Bobby had a low opinion of doctors and dentists. He had all the metal fillings in his teeth removed because he thought radiation from them was injuring his health, or perhaps American or Russian enemies were causing the harmful radiation from his molars.

That's a summary, he also believed that Russians/Americans were monitoring him through the fillings in his teeth - according to 'Bobby Fischer Goes to War'.
