Time limit and other questions for new chess.com players

Hello,

I have played only two games here. 10 minutes ones. First game I got beaten by a better player and was not far from check mate when time limit was near. Other game was worse, I got laughed that I did not see I could capture enemy's queen by my knight and the other player quit.

I am used to see a 3D chessboard and overlook things even more in 2D.

1) How game time limit works? I am not a good player without a time limit but with a time limit I was stressed that I played much much worse than usual.

2) Is it possible to play and enjoy online chess here when I am tired and cannot think well? Usually I play offline Windows chess at low difficulty to relax. That has an advantage I can take a break anytime and even take back some move from time to time.

Thanks for answer.

Well here's a list of the time controls available..

Why are there different ratings in live chess

Live Chess has three different ratings based on different time controls:

  • Bullet rating - For games under 3 minutes.
  • Blitz rating - For games of 3 minutes to 14 minutes.
  • Rapid rating - For games 15 minutes and longer.

We keep these rating separate because of the largely different skills involved in playing shorter or longer games.

Note that the per-move bonus time is significant - not just the base minutes.

The system assumes an average game-length of 40 moves to estimate the total length of time available to each player; the result is what determines which rating is affected by a given time control:

A time control of 2 | 12 therefore results in a Blitz (not Bullet) game like so:

2 minutes + (12 seconds x 40 moves = 480 seconds) = 10 minutes

As a reference, here are some examples of presets available in Live:

Time Control  Estimated Length  Game/rating type
5 | 0 5 minutes Blitz
10 | 0 10 minutes Blitz
2 | 12 10 minutes Blitz
3 | 0 3 minutes Blitz
4 | 4 6.5 minutes Blitz
15 | 10 22 minutes Rapid
1 | 5 4.5 minutes Blitz
1 | 0 1 minute Bullet

Concerning 2, I would recommend daily chess. It is a chess game where are made in a daily basis. This way, you have 24 hours to think a move, and you can play your move whenever you want.

Thank you for responses. But those mostly did not answer my questions.

I am sorry for probably stupid questions. I assume whichever player loses their time limit, he automatically loses. So it seems to me it is better to play reasonably fast and get a check mate than playing balanced or winning game and go out of time and lose 100%.

Regarding daily chess or some long games, I am afraid that relatively lot of people would cheat by using some chess program.

A player that runs out of time will lose only if the other player has sufficient mating material.

Regarding your other concern, if you ever suspect anyone of using disallowed resources, you should report them.

Cheating will continue to exist, whatever we do about it. You just have to cope with the few people that actually cheat, and report them if you are certain

Also, as you pointed out, it is a good strategy to play quick moves, even if they are not the best. However, I believe that this only happens in extremely small time limits, like 1 or 2 minutes, where 10 seconds can be more important than a whole queen, and not in time limits of 5 min and higher. There, it is more important to play good moves somewhat fast, from playing garbage moves in seconds. After all, if you wanna be better at chess, you must learn how to think and calculate faster. Hope i helped you.

Glad that I helped. I believe that this time limit is good if you want to think your moves carefully, and it will help you over all. I started playing chess with that kind of time limit.
