It seems to be the luck of the draw as to your opponents. I've given out several trophies, but in 81 completed games I've received only 1 trophy and that was way back in the 8th game I played. And I always start a game with a pleasant greeting, and have never once made a rude comment in game messages (I save that for the forums 
).
One other person that I've never played gave me a trophy unrelated to any games.
Bottom line, keep being pleasant and handing out trophies when you feel like it, and recognize that not receiving any doesn't reflect what others think of you.
