The trophies would be digital not physical... so I don't think it would cost much aside from time and programming. They would be like achievements on the XB360.
so how can I add trophies to the tournament? I created one, but there were no trophies... so the winner will not get anything when he wins it?

The default trophies are Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. http://www.chess.com/tournament/expelling-system.
when creating a tournament I didn't have to choose the trophies... so this doesn't mean that the first three players won't get their rewards, does it?
it means they will get the default medals... did I miss anything?!
if not I can create to tournament without putting the trophies... they will be put themselves...

Tournaments where the maximum number of participants is set at 12 or fewer, only have a winner - no 2nd or 3rd places.
Creating custom trophies for a tournament is optional. If the maximum number of participants is set at 12 or fewer, you can't create 2nd PLACE or 3rd PLACE custom trophies.
so, if there are more than 12 players registered, there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies by default, won't there...?!

One thing that would be nice to see is a trophy / award system. These awards could be given to the user for a variety of reasons such as...
total games played
winning streaks / losing streaks
defeating an opponent in x amount of turns (one for a long game and one for a short game)
playing x amount of games at once
winning x amount of games playing as white / black etc...
The trophies / awards could be viewed in the users profile and each one could have its own unique graphic. Also there could be different levels for each trophy. For example, there could be a trophy for a 5 win streak and one for a 20 win streak.I think this would be nice to have because there would be more to look at in the profiles other than the stats.
