You dont know how to deal with people do you?

Teach your children to play chess with you and with each other. Dont worry you are not a good player. They can learn to become good chess players and beat you. It's the internet age.

Why not teach them something you do feel more confident about? You don't say their ages, but draughts or gin rummy are also enjoyable games for kids. The main thing is you spend good times together..

Get Murray Chandlers book: How to beat your dad at chess.  Its an excellent book.

You could try looking up the St Louis chess club's (ccscsl) youtube videos (see https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVWaFpMwtaGgJy03_4RtTAmLSCAonR8ww); they have quite a prolific, and consistent, section dedicated to beginners - which might be ideal to learn (and watch) together. Hope that helps you out.

Thank you !

I'll second the vote for watching the St Louis Chess club videos on youtube. The best way to improve past 1000 is to do the tactics training problems every day and to understand the basics of strategy--controlling the center, developing pieces, castling. You should also learn basic checkmates, like how to mate a king with a rook and king, queen/knight. After that you'll learn more about how to develop simple plans like how to attack a pawn chain, make pins and pile on the pressure, use discover attacks, put pieces on outposts, double rooks on open files or the 7th rank, and how to trade your inactive/bad pieces for your opponents active/good pieces. There are great videos and programs on chess.com too if you get a membership.

Just play with your kids and have fun. Chess is great fun no matter what level you play on. If the kids want to learn more tell them to go to chess kids or some such site.

1000 is a number that describes your results NOT the amount of chess that you know.  the Most important thing you can teach anyone about chess; is to have fun.  and frankly having a parent that can be beat Might not be such a bad thing.

There ARE things that could be taught though.  a rank beginner ought to learn:

  • how to checkmate with 2 rooks and a King vs a King,  with 1 queen and a king vs a King(very important)- and perhaps 1 Rook and a king vs a King
  • opening principles.
  • Examples of a Fork, Skewer, Pin, Discovered Attack, and a decoy.  Beginners should find a collection of easy tactical puzzles, or spend some time at one of the internets good tactics servers.

and ... thats it!  you don't want to overstudy.  Not every kid will even want to study. and if a kid can play a lot and learn from their mistakes- they might not need to do much study to rapidly improve.

Try ChessKid.com (it's part of the chess.com family). My kids love it.
