US vs. FIDE rules

I was surprised that this site uses US rules while international competitions use FIDE rules, which would be more appropriate for such an internationally visited chess community. Specifically, if your opponent runs out of time and you only have a bishop or a knight while your opponent, say, has a pawn, then the game, according to the US rules and at this site, is declared a draw, while per the international rules, you win in any position where a cooperative checkmate is possible. Thus, I lost half a point in a live game. I am wondering if that's only me who believes that the US rule does not make sense and should not be used here at this site.

I fully agree that we should be using Fide rules and not USCF rules but what are you gonna do.  Don't like it Fide has their own live play chess site.

Thank you dear 2200. I don't really mind playing this rule as long as it is even to both opponent. I did not even know that this rule existed, and I was shocked by obvious meaninglessness of it. Appears like one of those less-than-smart things, like gallons and Fahrenheits, unknown outside this one country.
