vacation rule unfair

I could see that being very useful if your power goes out, which has been the case for some people here in Ohio.  You might not be able to put it on vacation yourself.

..mike: exactly what i did. made my moves, activate vacation and went up remote mountain retreat. now am back and vacation taken off... no harm done. i think its a great feature.. to bad i did not know how to do it before. so this was my first, and i love it.

I don't see that there is any selective effect on vacation abusers of the current rule. If a vacation abuser wishes to prolong a dead lost game (more fool them), then they can play a move and go on vacation. How is this any more difficult than for a normal player who wishes to take a vacation?

The only selective difference is between paying and non-paying members and, while the auto-vacation feature does give a slight advantage to paying members and a slight boost (on average) to their ratings, it is chess.com's privilege as a commercial site to favour paying customers in this way.

I have not looked too close at this in the past but I have had the vacation settings apply automatically if I am away, I "think" it kicks in when it is my turn and the time ticks down to just a few minutes left before I lose on time.  Here is what it says in the settings...

"Premium Members get auto-vacation protection, so if they don't make it to a computer in time, their account will automatically be set on vacation. "

This system has always worked for me and I really like it.  Maybe its time to support chess.com by sending them a few bucks to me a paid member... or am I missing something?

Hi Kelowna

yes you are missing something. This forum was started in December 2007. That was before premier members got auto-vacation protection when they were short on time. When I wrote the initial posts your games just timed out whether you were a premium member or not. I though this was unfair as it penalised the most active members. It would seem chess.com agreed as they changed the rules.

I am a premium member and do support chess.com and now benefit from the newer rules. In fact I believe the discussion in this forum helped bring about the introduction of these new rules you quote. It was shortly after this forum pointed out the unfairness of the old rules that they were changed.

By the way Kelowna, supporting an online community involes so much more than 'sending a few bucks'. It's also about making a positive contribution to that community by, for example, highlighting some of its weaknesses.

'Maybe it's time to' start reading a whole thread in context before criticising others opinions?

Good luck

why do you bother with vacation( you think some aspects are unfair) why have you walked away from my match with you??

[EDIT BY A MOD:  attacking other players is prohibited by the terms of service. repeating such personal attacks can result in account closing.]
