The considerate thing to do is to not play games if your planning a vacation.
Vacation time?

When you have it set to auto-vacation, it only starts to take effect when you have ~80 minutes left to make your move.

Illness IS a legitimate scenario, but maybe I don't understand your frustration. Were you sick for 4-5 days?? There is a limit.

not that it's really any of your business, but yes!
I set to vacation when there were days left in my games, when i return a whole bunch have just "a few minutes" left, so they haven't actually been paused, but allowed to run down to "a few minutes"

That is my point. Sapose (god forbid) your illness lasted say 30 days longer with hospitalization. Now you make a miraculous recovery, but those few minutes have expired.

i'm not sure exactly, but i think i set to vacation on Monday or Tuesday...
I had some "no vacation" games where i've tried to keep up with, but unfortunately couldn't attend to some of them on time

I don't know what to tell you. You lost 4 days of vacation, but in post 6, you said you were sick for 4 days. See if your vacation re-sets on your next move. If not, contact staff with a submit ticket. Glad to hear your feeling better.

That is quite impossible. At a minimum I am advancing in several tournaments that will start up at some point automatically (once other players have finished their rounds) regardless of what my desires to take vacation may be.
Vacation time for me is there for vacation, when I am too busy chasing my kids around Disneyworld to investigate the latest wrinkles in the Sveshnikov.

What i said was that i had lost 4 (or thereabouts) days of vacation time in the space of an hour, or last time around, half an hour.
That is on top of the vacation time that i actually used

What is the big inquest into vacation time? That is the rules that is what chess.com allows and that is what we all signed up for. gambit-man is talking about those rules not happening in reality. gambit-man sounds like you should just let your vacation time kick in automatically when required or is that only if you pay a premium rate.
My rant on this is due to a tournament i finished my last games in March suddenly restarting the next round while I was in Maldives on holiday in December. Only reason i did not lose on time was fortunately because i got an alert on my mobile and my automatic holidays saved me until i was able to get to a connection and play. We all have busy lives and vacations are there to let you manage your games whether you are working, sick or just cant be bothered for a day or two. No-one suffers through having to wait a week or fortnight for a move in a chess game.

Never sign up for a tournament where vacation time is not allowed. I lost lots of rating points doing that, thinking I was on vacation when I wasn't.
Tournaments that don't allow vacation should have big, glowing, neon sign at the top warning people to stay away.

Now when entering a no vacation tournament, you get a polite reminder and asks for confirmation.
I entered those for some quick tourneys.

Gambit man; That's a different story; post #15--"That's on top of the vacation time I actually used". Now I understand. Your right, something smells fishy. Jon Rowney--rant away. I thought this was an elderly gentleman, who's time was reset, when he came back. Sounds like it was reset twice. To geir44; your right. Say you go to Hawaii for a month. While there, you get hit by a car. Now your incapacitated for 6 months. I'm sure if someone can E-mail chess.com, they should save your games.
Why is it when i take some vacation time the clock still runs? I don't run out of time, but when i return from vacation time i have awhole bunch of games with just a few minutes left.
The last time this happened, i was set to auto-vacation (so as not to lose those games with just a few minutes left), then lost 4 or 5 days of my vacation time within half an hour...
The time was returned to me by staff upon complaint, but it seems to me there is an inherent problem with the vacation settings
