I've been playing a number of welcome games recently and while they may be helpful for some people, they would be more helpful if they were takeback games (or an altered form of takeback where the "senior" player could offer to let the other person take back their move -- a sort of one-way takeback vs full takeback).
This would allow the game to be much more instructional when the new player made a bad move and feel more like a real world game with a new player (where I can say "watch my rook" while someone is moving).
It seems to me that the Welcome game is to the point of getting the new player familiar with the site, rather than helping the new player get better at chess.

Just my $.02.
