How is this relevant to chess?

blitzjoker

The Defence by Vladimir Nabokov of course.  It's about a chess player you know.  Nabokov himself was an ok player, and made up some good problems too.

I've read some of Greene's novels, but not that one. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Brighton Rock is another that leaves a lasting impression. Quite menacing.

Travels with my Aunt was a bit slow IMHO. However, when I saw a three-man stage show of the book, it was very funny.

If you like stories that make heavy use of cliffhangers, then could you read the writers of the nineteenth century. Dostojevski's Crime and Punishment is my favorite.

Evenings on a farm near Dikanka of Nicolaj Gogol is a marvellous book.

From the English literature Ulysses of James Joyce.
