What's in a name?

Oh my sir, great minds do indeed think alike! ;)
I was thinking only yesterday about starting a thread about how we chose our aliases! I asked Rael, god of the forum, if it had been done before and he whipped up this thread http://www.chess.com/forum/view/fun-with-chess/chesscom-nicknames
Some interesting reading there, but definately no harm in starting another.
ahhhh so thats where yer name comes from *chuckles* nice.
Pistoleer - means one who uses pistols.
pronounced - Pissed O Leer :P which ive been asked many times if my surname is O'Leery and im just pissed lol
Mine is my now usual gaming alias. It stems from when i used to play CSS (Counter Strike Source) and i found it too easy and not much fun nor challenge using automatic weapons, prefering to play tactically with a bit of skill instead of pray n sprayin ;P so i only used the pistols in the game, loving to use the Dual Elite pistols heh. Nothing like taking out an eejit weildin an AK-47 or a sniper rifle, with yer wee pistols ;)
Then i moved onto DoDS (Day of Defeat Source), sadly pistols were not much use in that game, but i used them more than anyone else, that and the spade! Loved gettin up close an personal with agressive attacks that would surprise people heh. First to kill and be killed *chuckles*
The name stuck when i then was playing regularily on a server and ended up as a server admin with a gaming company. Now i bring it with me. It handily also applies to my chess style heh.. i love mad and agressive openings..sacrificing and generally running about like a mad eejit firing from the hip heh.

Wow what a lot of feedback so quickly.
You'd never guess that I got my name from my favourite opening.

That it is... but not quite as obvious as mine!!!

I was just trying to think up an original and unique username, and I settled upon Shruikon. Pronounced Shrew-e-kon. It's really annoying when idiots with no reading comprehension think I misspelled shuriken though.

Well, I should be red-faced. This topic had already been done and I didn't realise. My good friend, the Pistoleer, gave the location above -- and if you missed that you can find it here
http://www.chess.com/forum/view/fun-with-chess/chesscom-nicknames
However, given the rapid responses -- sometimes from players who missed the first post, sometimes from players who posted there but don't mind sharing again -- it's probably an interesting topic so I don't feel too bad about the duplication.
The names our chess.com members use are intriguing. Just browsing my Games Archive I see that some are cryptic, some are friendly and some are definitely threatening.
When I faced grimreaper and saw his frightening avatar, it didn't matter that the whole expanse of the Pacific Ocean lay between us; I was already psychologically cowed and the defeat that followed was inevitable.
Then there was The Corleone. Like everybody else I had watched The Godfather and I felt that if he had offered a draw it would have been accompanied by the threat, “An offer you can't refuse.”
Kryptonite didn't worry me: I'm no Superman; and Hammers wasn't threatening physical violence—I assumed he was a West Ham FC supporter.
On the other hand some of the others seemed particularly friendly—like Home Park Henry—and I'd love to know what inspired that name.
Chess Witch must have cast a spell over me because I didn't give her much opposition.
When I played Chick-in-Charge a frisson of fear ran down my spine. I was much relieved when I read her profile and discovered that she wasn't into inflicting pain in one of those infamous parlours, but actually ran her own business. (C-i-C, I'm still a bit worried. It isn't that kind of business, is it?)
Some other names I was able to work out, and some I had to ask about.
Bergil is a minor character from Lord of the Rings; Pthaloblue is an artist and pthaloblue is a favourite colour; and Orko-the-Great is a character from a computer game.
Vuttvutt is interesting. It's a bit of Estonian onomatopoeia. Since my only two Estonian words are Paul and Keres I had to ask. It's an Estonian wordplay with meanings like “runs very fast” and “a kind of bird”. I imagine that's something like a humming bird whose wings beat very fast.
The first on-line chess club I joined was the Kasparov Chess Club (which was taken over by WCN which was itself swallowed up by ICC). On there my first handle was ThreeBees. One guy asked if I was a gardener and I had to point out that BBB is the acronym for Bulldust Baffles Brains.
I picked up the Dozy tag while writing a monthly column for the South Pacific Square Dance Review. I used the pseudonym Dozy Do (from the movement docey-do) and the editor called the column, Dancing With Dozy. It stuck.
So why not tell us about your name. What does it mean? Why did you select it?
