I have also noticed this... its annoying and I don't feel like checking my games b/c I know theres a dumb pop-up
whats with all the pop ups on chess.com

I dont get them anymore now that I paid the other day, but ONE of them came up as an attack site, detected by my McAfee software.

Yes, it didn't happen before chess.com was "updating to make chess.com a better place for you!" Why should chess.com have pop ups when they know it just is going to decrease their traffic because people don't want pop-ups giving their computer viruses?
Yes, it's a strike against chess.com in my books, and one of the reasons I came here in the first place...
Granted, get premium etc. to get rid of them, but for us poor suckers that simply can't get that for one reason or another...
I would also like to point out that these adds are of intellegence insulting grade... they could at least attempt to make them aesthetically pleasing for the 9/10's of a second I see them
Anybody care to make $100,000+ from google, btw? //psarcasm
[edit] incedentally, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense, you gotta keep this website afloat for both the free riding complaining members, and the paying, quality members alike. (Or at least as a member of the former, I would like to think that), and incedentally, a popup add that does just that in the background doesn't actually add that much clutter to the interface, it just gets annoying when you get around to closing the window... rather than just all the time. [/end edit - kissarse]

REALLY annoying, those ads. Whether this is intentional ("Hey, let's use adverts that are as annoying as possible, then tell our free members to pay so they won't be subjected to them!") or un-intentional (simply over-looked by the admins?), seeing those stupid things is enough to make me want to go find another site. Poor form, Chess.com.

I echo the complaint by xxobot. The scammers are actually trying to convince me that they all (and there's three of "Them") live in my home town! please, staffers, get "scott's money blog" out of here!

If you become a paying member there is no ads. Thats one of the good things with becoming a paying member. If you check the membership site, you will see this. Since i became a paying member(6 months ago) i havent seen one ad or pop-up on chess.com
I use Safari and even with pop up blockers it is real bad. It also has gotten much worse. i am sure it is a way to encourage users to upgrade. I am thinking of leaving the site due to this

I am using internet explorer and it blocks them all, just have to temp enable it if I want to use any of the site pop ups.
Anyway if it earns the site more money I will live with the hastle to play free!

I agree with everybody who is protesting against the pop ups. On more than one occasion my computer has frozen on them and I've had to reboot the whole system. If they get any worse I will just pack it in. Adverts fine, pop ups definately not.
psion--the pops blocker on SAfari does not block them. IE 7 does a pretty good job but most of my time I use Safari. I know everyone loves Firefox but I am not a big fan. I have not yet tried Chrome. Having said all this this site is not important enough for me to a) join or b) alter my browser. I will just go to the other sites I use more frequently.
Note this is not a knock on chess.com as everyone has features that are important to them. Also I understand their need to make money---but as a consumer we all make our own choices as well

Pay for a membership and you won't get any, simple as that.
Yep I don't think you have rights to blame chess.com for these pop-ups. Chess.com has given you loads of free stuff and you just complain about some pop-up windows. It only takes a few seconds to close them if they bother you.

You are right--I am not laming them but if it becomes annoying enough I will leave the site. It is a recent change and it has reduced my enjoyment here.
Everyone places a different value on the "free" stuff here versus other place and can make their own choice whether to pay not not
Does anyone know why their are now pop up adverts every time I go on chess.com? it didn't happen before?
