Why does blocking do so little?

Per Chess.com:

Once blocked, a member cannot do any of the following

  • post notes to your account
  • send you messages
  • accept your game seeks
  • be auto-matched with you in open seeks
  • join tournaments that you are running
  • post in content that you created

I think blocking a person should also block them from seeing anything you post in the forums, not just posts you create. My only reason for blocking people is from harassment in the forums and some guys' need to reply to every single comment of mine in a harassing way. The list also doesn't say anything about sending or receiving game challenges. I would think chess.com would be vigilant in crushing hostility and harassment towards the very small number of women on this site. I've been a part of heated debates, and even insulted and I get over it. But to be constantly annoyed and harassed for no reason makes this site rather unwelcoming.

TRextastic

Literally, here's one of them. He's stalking every post of mine. Even though I have blocked him he can "post in content that I created".

"If you start an argument... expect a response." And yet this post had nothing to do with him. I've posted many other comments that have nothing to do with him and he still harasses me.

There's a bug with that...

Just ignore them.

First, I love your avatar. That's adorable

But also, yes, I could ignore them. And I used to. But it has become an overwhelming problem on this site. And it shouldn't be happening so I'm taking a stand. We should have the tools to make it stop.

Pulpofeira

Thank you, I agree, but problem with not seeing certain posts is forums wouldn't make sense for people who are blocked I suppose. I think another way can be to take screenshots and report.

I just reported him so hopefully that helps. But while the forums may be confusing for some, that should just be the consequence of being blocked. Either that or just the inability to quote me. He could still respond but it would be easier to glaze over that way.

In the end, really he should be given a firm warning and if it continues he should have his account closed. Either that or I can find a different chess site where every time I comment little boys like this don't swarm to call me a lying troll who's really a man.

Thank you for your input  It'll work itself out one way or another. Hopefully they up the blocking consequences because it seems pretty useless as is.

I thought that one had been squished by now.

Also, I thought a blocked member isn't supposed to be able to directly interact with you. So, they shouldn't be able to send game challenges, trophies, etc. Of course, that doesn't include replying to topics you may also take part in (that would potentially break the forums as useful medium, with how many players get blocked for different reasons).

As to closing accounts, it happens. The problem is that it is really impossible to prevent new accounts from starting the process again.

Blocking, as it is, seems to do the job - prohibitng direct contact. That said, in 9 years I've blocked 2 people and even those 2 I unblocked after a short time.

Well lets take a look at Mr Winnie the Poo. Undecided  He's been here 5 days. He has 0 friends, 9 threads, and doesn't play on-line.   2 of his threads are;                                                                    A)  Best move before farting.                                                                                    and    B)  Should chess have cheerleaders.                                                       I'm assuming the 2 in his name means his account was closed once.  Probably  high school sophmore. Has trouble reading because he has to copy & paste.

Yeh. Block me, see what happens.

I think I can still post on your threads.

I've never seen this really happen, but I do believe blocked members can still post on your threads.

Colin20G

If you put something in a forum (or anywhere in internet) then it is public. Deal with that.

Any attempt to block a particular person from reading public content from you would probably make the whole site highly impratical (I wonder how the hell It would be even possible) and even then, the lurker would still be able to create a new account simply for lurking purposes. How would you prevent such a thing?

etc2000chess

Very true.

Blocked members should not be able to but there was a bug that still allowed it. Apparently hasn't been fixed yet or some other change broke the fix if it existed.

Still not a good idea to take advantage of it, expecially if the blocked person is aware.

The public part of this site is readable and searchable without signing in. Do u want to change that?

ANOK1

out them !

if the troll trails after you in public forum after youve blocked them , then heres a great opportunity to show them as they are

copy and paste all the stuff they posted that annoyed in the first place

online trolls are keyboard warriors at best most are wimps and wont appreciate you showing them as they are or have been to you

Karowyn

If someone is bothering you and being innapropriate send the info to chess.com administration and ask the person to be 'muted' they will be unable to write any messages to anyone about anything.

"But while the forums may be confusing for some, that should just be the consequence of being blocked."

I'm not sure I agree with that. Because then you're taking it beyond just being blocked with you; you're blocking him or her from a legitimate part of the forums: seeing the opinions of those who post, which does include you. It would be like blocking a person from playing in the same tournament as you because of your personal issues with him or her; you can't control a public area just because of your private issues.

So yeah, the key issue is that you entered a public area, I think, when you decided to post here. The forums aren't some private club; you could always make your own group if you want something like that. I agree there isn't a totally easy solution, though. I just think, you can have your preferences, but not to the point where you can control a public area. And after all, if a person is just clearly abusive, hopefully they'll get banned anyway.

I think this is the worst bug in the forums.

Are u gonna cry?

I really hope you quoted the wrong comment, because

  1. That is 100% irrelevant.
  2. You have bad grammar.
  3. That is very rude.

For what reason do you think I'm going to cry? Martin quoted me like a normal human being and described the blocking bug. I quote back and reply with a comment about it. On the other hand, YOU come in out of nowhere and write "Are u gonna cry?" That is so irrelevant that it makes me cringe. Try thinking twenty-two times before irrelevantly insulting others.
