Why Hikaru Nakamura doesn't participate in US Championship?

As in the title.

When it comes to Levon well he's just moved in but what may be the reason for Hikaru Nakamura?

BroiledRat
Hikaru has said on many occasions that he is a professional streamer first and a Chess player second.

So that may well have something to do with it.

He’s also rather rusty in classical, so perhaps he’s just not prepared for such stiff competition for the time being.

He could get way more money streaming. And I think that’s good. It’s hard to earn a living off of chess, so I’m happy he could. I think competitive chess will take a huge back seat for him.
IResignedNow
Because he will play the other event after this month and there will be a conflict in the schedule lololol

He's scared of losing rating points, as the US Championship has lots of relatively lower rated contestants, and even if Hikaru draws one of them he will lose rating.

Basically he wants to preserve his high rating by continuing to draw other elite players in their super-GM "bubble" and doesn't want to risk dropping out of the top 10.

He found better sources of income and is not young anymore..we don't live in an era where chess players can only make money from chess tournaments and schools if they only rely on that profession.

Or in plain words... "screw that. I've found my comfort zone..no need to act tough to bet my future on something else"

Hikaru already said multiple times that streaming is his priority and calling. While he still participates in speed chess events, he won't play any classical events anymore.

He's already scheduled to play in the fide grand swiss that starts in 15 days. It's a lot more important than the u.s. championship because the top 2 are qualified for the next candidates.

So are you ya hasbeen I will smash you

IM is a respectable title, spending 30 years for it is not too much.

Why Hikaru Nakamura doesn't participate in US Championship?

He's bored of winning

DreamscapeHorizons

I think he's likely giving all his spare energy to prepping for the grand swiss since the top 2 go to the next candidates. It's only 15 days away.

Ok thx for the update. Must be a recent decision. It surprises me because he said in an interview that classical chess is ridiculous. It was very likely an intended statement he wanted to make back then during pogchamps.

He is a good chess player so that should make some great games + gives more content for his channel.

Dropping out of top ten? This has happened ages ago- he is currently #19.

Super-GM bubble? OK, I get your point- who am I to dispute Jesus who said ignorance is bliss?

Who knew an IM can be this dumb? He wants to be in the top 10 US you fool!

Settle down boy, why show such disrespect to an obvious respected chess follower/player and coach?.

Also,  the U.S. chess championship pays 50,000 for 1st place but the other 3 events connected to the grand swiss are far greater opportunities. Theres the grand swiss which pays 70,000 for 1st BUT... the trip to the candidates is far better. 1st place there pays 56,000 (2021 usd equivalent) but the winner gets title match which pays the loser 800,000 this year and the winner 1.2 mil. I'm not saying Naka has a good chance of winning the candidates but to get in it is a golden opportunity, like getting a golden ticket in Willy Wonkas chocolate factory.

So I can see the logic of skipping this event and resting up for the Oct 25 event. Caruana (who has most realistic chance of candidates) might get burned out before grand swiss from playing this one.

Yes, but how does that have anything to do with my statement? I never stated I was almost as good as an IM, though I have a feeling you spent 30 years of your life for that IM title.

Well, you may consider doing the same, after getting a life first.

I do have a life, I am not sure you do. Like dude, why would you dedicate 30 years to get an IM title? That's like giving away half of your life for not even the greatest title!

Someone like you wouldn't understand what enjoyment/passion is.
