Why is the Russian flag grey?

I recently had a chess game with a Russian player, (I played again recently) and it caught my attention that his Russian flag was gray, I know about the situation from what I heard on the news, but:

  • Should this situation reach a game, in which Russia has been of vital importance with great exponents?

This situation is absurd when other countries have never been vetoed when they invade and kill civilians and manage markets at will. (you know which country I mean)

Let's leave this political situation aside, and much more in this game to which Russia has contributed so much.

It is sad to see this double standard in the world.

yes, chess is a sport, but it is not part of the olympic games.

I am sad that these situations occur in this wonderful game, I am not Russian, but I am a Citizen of the World!

I have to make it clear that I am against the war or the deaths, but they are different situations, discriminatory and racist towards people who do not influence the decisions of their government.

Just because other countries have done thing, doesn't make what Russia is doing right.

Anyways, if you click the flag, you get the reasons why.

Still makes little sense to only punish Russian players - after all, there are plenty of non-Russians who support what Putin is doing, and they get a free pass.

I agree that it's hypocritical, because there are many countries (or I would rather say goverments..) what did or still do some disgusting things in the world.. american's wars in Middle East, Xinjiang camps in China.. In Africa is some local war almost every year..  and North Korea doesn't even need any comment..
On the other hand you can say that we should be happy that at least this one thing from many has some reaction in the world..
Also why is even important to people could play with the flag of their country? Less nationalism is in my opinion only good thing. Especially less nationalism in big countries...

this is a stupid argument "We should be happy that at least in this instance the world cares".

like wtf. what about when America screwed over Afghanistan recently? what about all the disgustingly criminal things AMerica has done like Abu Graive. No one ever made the american flag grey then.

This isn't about fighting against evil regardless of who does it. this is about western society trampling on Russia. Russia hasn't even done anything anywhere near as bad as the US in the situation of Ukraine. but people are blowing it out of proportion and making claims which aren't true. So yes the OP is very accurate when they mention this is a ridiculous situation with the Russian flag on chess.com. It's literal discrimination and we as a group are allowing it to happen.

Firstly as I said I don't defend U.S. anyhow for what they did.
But as was said many times that US or any other country do bad things doesn't mean that Russia should do them too. Yes people should know that Russia isn't the only problem in the world and yes its very publicized compare to the other problems, but thats not the excuse for Russian government to do what they did.

Secondly I couldn't care less even if chess.com disabled flag of my own country from this site... I live in the Czech Republic but I play here under a different flag just because I like how the flag looks.. Not that I would have anything against my country, I just don't care. Disableing a flag isn't an important thing what would discriminate anyone in my opinion. If cc wanted to ban russian players here, then yes I would be among the first people who would be angry about that. I did argue here on forums with many people who wanted to ban Russian players from this site. I can even send you links to those threads if you want..
But if its only a flag I don't really care at all. Flag is conected with the government in my eyes and I don't have any reason to like the russian government.

Anyway, not all russian peoples want war and support putin, some of them also want the war to stop.

Still doesn't explain why non-Russian people who support Putin's war are given a free pass. That's not even whataboutism, because it's addressing the same topic.

I don't think that they have a free pass though. I mean if you post here anything political like supporting the war, it will be locked sooner or later.. also.. maybe if you were enough agressive with that, you could be banned.. honestly I don't know tho..
but anyway don't showing a flag of some country feels to me more like an symbolic thing than as something what could discriminate anybody...

I mean, sure, but you're still not asked to specifically state that you oppose it before being accepted into the community, people won't view you with suspicion just because of your passport. And yeah, if you were aggressive with it you'd probably get banned, but that's what happens if you're aggressive on online forums...

Ah, I better go play some games now, this discussion likely ain't going anywhere good anyways.

It's going to be a long war so maybe it will never be changed back.

What do you mean with "free pass"? that they are still allowed to play on the site? But obviously everybody is, even russian people who support the war (with the exception that they don't post war propaganda etc etc). Only the flag is "banned", not any people. And the site had good reasons to do that.
