Why would someone prefer Lichess over Chess.com?

I'm curious about the point of view on why someone would prefer lichess over chess.com.  I've spent time on lichess.com, but what are the arguments for why it's better?  Because to me honestly it seems like chess.com is better in almost every way, so I don't understand the rivalry or why so many people prefer lichess

I've never heard of Lichess.com.    Must be a Chess.com competitor.    Before Chess.com, I used to play chess on Pogo.com (unlike Chess.com that's solely dedicated to everything about chess, it's one of the top 5 gaming sites in the world that provides so very many other games of all kinds); but because of the Java and Flash technologies that were discontinued a few years ago (not by Pogo.com's choice), they had to discontinue most of my favorite games there including chess.    And that's when I discovered Chess.com!

Now I'll have to check out Lichess.com!

Assuming you meant .org - I like both sites for different reasons. For one, puzzles over there aren't limited to three a day for free users. (I'm a paid member here, but my kids aren't and they can do puzzles on [the other site] without running into limits.) Also game review is limited here to one per day for free users, while the other site doesn't have that limit.

free puzzles and chess insights, I use both sites depending what I want to do.

cause they suck and are trash ewwwww lichess is garbage, chess.com #1

There’s little reason to have this topic on Chess.com. If you want to know why others prefer Lichess over Chess.com, ask in their forums and the users there will happily tell you their reasons.

Lichess is completely free. Has some stuff such as unlimited puzzles, simuls, and probably some other stuff but I can't name any right now because I haven't been on Lichess for months. Chess.com is better in almost every way for paying members, though. More fancy features and all that.

No Jordan I outright disagree with you, I think there are plenty of people who use both sites and have acquaintances who prefer lichess who engage in chess discussion with their friends and I'm sure there are plenty of people on this site right here who have heard reasons from people who use lichess on why they prefer lichess.  So there you go Jordan.  A disagreement.

Your homework is to escalate this matter by responding to me... At which point I'll respond to you, and our frustration with each other will increase on a daily basis, until we start thinking of talking points to make to each other while we're having shower time, and work time, we'll be thinking about our back and forth discussion in our heads, and it'll spiral out of control, and if that's what you want JOrdan, bring it.

sightem

they don't charge you for FOSS lol
and not to mention their website is open source

They prefer Lichess because of the grossly inflated ratings there...it makes them feel that they're better at chess than they actually are... :facepalm

I believe that the Garden State Chess League uses Lichess as a platform for online matches when OTB ones cannot be arranged. Could this also be done on Chess.com? This I don`t know. A lot of my West Orange Chess Club members use both so either site must be adequate for most people.

People enjoy the other site because many of the tools are free over there. That is basically the entire argument.

Oh and apparently they have less lag (which could be explained by the fact that chess.com has a lot more users than lichess), and their premoves take zero seconds compared to 0.1 on chess.com. I personally prefer the 0.1 second premoves, though.

smolnova

lichess has no customization options

also the puzzles are free (but sheesh, -18 for each puzzle?)

My opinion - I don't hate chess com but I prefer lichess. If you have money to upgrade your chesscom - it is really better. Lichess is better because it is FREE)

You claim to be a poor boy, and then you denounce a site where everything is free.

Are you trolling, or what?

yeah its actually a joke, i am poor tho and this membership i only got it gifted but i actually like lichess a lot and play bullet there everyday. i made that joke as i seen these similar threads repeating and i didn't know if i should write my same explanation or rather make a small joke as a reference to the chess.com haters that really despise lichess, i dont tho

to me chess. coms setup is better, with better premoves but lichess forums are a million times better because they have rules that people follow and they have no "how many times can we say hi" games

Waterstone33

Yes, Chess.com is cleaner and better orgenized, but lichess.org is totally free.

InsertInterestingNameHere

bro don’t use the L slur like that

Waterstone33

Yes. That helps too.

Currently I use lichess studies for my chess training and I am very satisfied with it.
