1849 Official Staunton Ebony Chessmen
A fine chess set encompasses history, beauty and a promise.  The 1849 Staunton Ebony Chessmen are a physical representation of chess history.  This set has been the base of much of chess design today and is representative of our beautiful game.

The history of The Staunton Chessmen is undisputed and I will not re-hash it here, but I believe the most important part of a chess set is a promise.  The promise that a quality chess set will transport you through time and space as far back as the shock of learning what castling or en passant was to the feverish blitz battles of last week.  The 1849 Set, particularly the knights, is a thing of beauty.  The neoclassical design of the set, mirroring architecture and design of the time, rendered in my opinion one of the most beautiful representation of chessmen ever.

A beautiful chess set is a time capsule of memories shared with friends and family. The fondest memories are created, in my opinion, over a chessboard.  As we play with friends we learn so much more about one another than a generic conversation could ever reveal.  The style and play of each person is unique to them and nothing could capture that sentiment as a beautiful chess set modeled after the classic 1849 Staunton.  A quality set like this must be protected in a box, hence why I elected the box and chessmen link.

I would love to own the 1849 Official Staunton Set to treasure as my personal time machine.  No it is is not the DeLorean; its better.  It is better because it allows me to grow as a player, learn as student and connect as a friend.  That in my opinion is the essence of chess and why we love the game so much, and why we value our sets so much.  The set becomes the beacon for connecting to the past champions and to our future friends.

Hello everyone. I want to be part of the competition. I will say what I like about the products from official staunton, I will also say why I like the things that I picked.

The chess pieces that I like from the website you can see at the website here: https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/collectors-series-chess-pieces. I want chess pieces to be made from nice wood, so that I can see the wood and that they are made of wood. Especially the black pieces, I like them to be light or dark brown with nice wood patterns in the pieces. I really like the black side of the pieces in the link and I can imagine them on the board that I picked. The color looks very nice. I also want my pieces to have a nice shape, round and very elegant, like these pieces. I like the rooks because they are tall and powerful, and you have the feeling that they are important. The knight from this pieces is very well made with a lot of work that you can see in the head and body, that workers spent some time on this also. I like the bishops because they are round and I like that they are a bit taller than the knights. The queen and king look magnificent, like the perfect couple. In the end, the most important, is the soldiers, the pawns that they are very brave and they look ready to fight.

The board I like from official staunton is the one here: https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boards/products/large-prestige-palisander-chess-board. The board, wow. Let’s start with the thing around the board, the frame, that makes the playing area look really nice and easy to see and clear. The frame has nice wood shapes, with darker and lighter bits and for me that really completes the wooden feel that I like when I play chess. It looks like it feels good to play on this board. I also like that the frame is light, and the dark squares are darker. It looks like it is light, lighter than solid wooden chess boards, so maybe I can take it with me easier in a bag, if I get a bag. I hope to win, and to get these nice pieces and board, to play with them together. I also like that around the playing area there is a black line, that makes it look a bit more official, like you could use this also for more serious games, and you take every game more serious. The board also looks very smooth, so the pieces that I order can fit with the coloured pieces and slide over the board very nicely.

The box I like is from the website https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boxes/products/luxury-makassar-chess-box. You need a nice box for your pieces because if you order a cheap box for good pieces then it doesn’t feel as special to use the pieces and also you want to keep them safe so a good box is important. I looked at some cheap boxes because I have chess pieces already, but for nicer pieces I want a nicer box also. I really like the color from the box in the link and the stripes on the box. I don’t know what the name is of the green material but it looks nice like it keeps the pieces safe and warm. I like that the box has a nice lock because that is important and it helps keep the pieces safe also. I like the things that keep the two parts of the box together, that look a bit gold and shiny, and well made. I also want the dark pieces to be in a different part from the white pieces so it’s important to have the middle thing that divides the two parts where the pieces go.

For all of these reasons I choose these things.

Okay, I'm in. Below you will find me waxing poetic about an Official Staunton chess set, board and storage box. Not that anyone would care, necessarily, but for the record I do not make a habit of shilling for companies. I will say, though, that I purchased a set of 1851 Official Staunton chessmen and box a couple of months ago or so (the pieces were actually antiqued boxwood and ebonised boxwood, not ebony, but it appears that they do not have that set on their site currently), and the set is absolutely perfect. I am so happy with this set. I do not know Carl of Official Staunton, other than from making that purchase. The service was outstanding. There was even a slight problem with the set, and Carl bent over backwards to make it right, with a turnaround speed that was breathtaking. Because of this refreshingly positive experience with Carl and Official Staunton, I am now a fan. Anyway, here's the spiel:

The great philosopher Plato wrote about the existence of ideal Forms that are absolutely perfect. You may be able to punch out a pretty decent representation of a triangle with the aid of a machine, but a truly Perfect Triangle can only exist in our minds. When I picture a Perfect Chess Set in my mind, the picture is of Official Staunton’s 1851 Antiqued and Ebony Chessmen (https://www.officialstaunton.com/products/1851-reproduction-antiqued-ebony-chessmen) . Each piece in this set serves as a perfect model for a King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook and Pawn. Not only is the design perfect, but the execution of the design is flawlessly done by master woodcarvers. The symmetry, proportion, balance, weight, color and finish are elegant, refined, understated, and are representative of what an ideal chessman should be. The most important thing about Chess is the game itself, and the beauty of the game can be appreciated on an inexpensive plastic set of chessmen on a vinyl board. Nonetheless, the sensuous feel and sound of a weighted wooden and felted piece as it travels the board lends an additional level of satisfaction when playing a game with a friend or playing through a classic historic match. This set provides that aesthetic physical beauty of chess play like no other.

A set such as this demands a battlefield that is worthy of it. Official Staunton’s 1851 set comes with a 4.4” King, so a board with 2 and 3/8” squares is called for. Nearly as important as the science of matching the size of the pieces to the board is the art of matching the style of the pieces to the board. Therefore, the simple and elegant Official Staunton Large Prestige Palisander Chess Board (https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boards/products/large-prestige-palisander-chess-board)  is an excellent choice. Crafted of palisander wood for the dark squares, and maple for the light, this board is the very picture in ones mind’s eye of what a chess board should be: simply dark and light squares of rich, lustrous woods enclosed by a simple and tasteful contrasting wood border. Like the 1851 chessmen that will battle upon its surface, this elegant board embodies the very essence of the word, “classic”. When perfection has been achieved, there is no desire for the craftsperson to gild the lily. This lily needs no enhancement. When you hear the satisfying “knock” of the felted bottoms of your King and Rook as they make contact with this board while castling Queenside, you will know that you have made the right choice in pairing the Prestige Palisander Chess Board with your pieces and pawns.

You love chess. Perhaps your children love the game, as well, but it may be that your love for the royal game will skip a generation. The pieces that you spent so many delightful hours with, recreating the games of Morphy, Capablanca, Tal or Kasparov, may someday be stored in an attic somewhere, or worse, moved across the country several times before finally being rediscovered by a grandchild sometime in the distant future. Your beautiful set needs to be protected so that your descendant does not come upon your beloved pieces to find your Kings with their crosses missing, Queens with broken crowns, Rooks with crumbled parapets, or Knights with their ears chipped. A beautiful heirloom chess set deserves to be well protected by the Official Staunton Deluxe Fitted Coffer (https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boxes/products/deluxe-fitted-coffer). The interior of this storage case is lined with felt, and it includes two inset drawers with individual compartments for each piece and pawn. There are even TWO Queen compartments for the Black and the White sides, to accommodate those sets that come with four Queens, as is customary with Official Staunton chess sets. The outside of this sturdy ark is fashioned of handsome red burl wood and, like the board and pieces that accompany it, this coffer embodies simple, understated elegance. With a locking mechanism and a tasseled golden key, this case will assuredly gain the attention of just the right sort of grandchild going through your attic or garage someday, thereby ensuring your beloved wooden armies a new lease on life for generations to come.

Am I supposed to write 200 words apiece on a set of pieces, a board, and a box, or can I write 200 words about one pieces-board-box bundle featured on the site?

Fischer Spassky 72' Series Ebony Chessmen

Picking just one set of pieces from the officialstauanton.com website is tricky.  If you held a gun to my head and asked me to make an instant decision I'm afraid I would still stumble and stutter whilst my brain singled out its collection of choice.  After much soul searching and deliberation I have arrived at my decision and it has the weight of history on its side.  I cannot think of a more delightful way to spend a rainy Sunday than reliving the the 1972 World Championship Match between Bobby Fischer and Robert Spassky held in Reykjavik and this reproduction of those immortal chessmen set the mood perfectly.  Yes, you may not have the flair and genius of the old master and you may be more prone to blunder than brilliance but how could you not take inspiration from such finely carved and famous pieces.  The beautifully pale white pieces contrast excellently against the dark black of the ivory men, not overly decorative, practical and built for one purpose;  to be played by two of the greatest exponents of the game who ever graced a chessboard.  If it's good enough for them then it's certainly good enough for me.

Bobby Fischer 72 Series Chess Board

Now that the difficult choice of the pieces has been made then the choice of board becomes ridiculously simple.  There only one board than can do justice to the Fischer Spassky 72' Series Ebony Chessmen and that's the Bobby Fischer 72 Series Chess Board.  The dark palisander squares compliment the light birch perfectly, then the whole lot is rounded off with a sublimely solid and thick mahogany frame.  Just one look at the board transports you straight back to Iceland in 72, arguably the heyday of international chess and a fever pitch than may well never be reached again.  Other chessboards are very much of a muchness, slightly differing yet bland variations on a theme whereas this board just screams history at you, it captivated the globe for untold hours and I am certain playing on it with the matching pieces would have the same effect on anyone regardless of their familiarity with the original event.

Luxury Hand Made Mahogany Chess Box

From such a difficult original choice everything else falls into line very easily, from the pieces the board becomes apparent and from the board the storage box is just as obvious.  The Luxury Hand Made Mahogany Chess Box is the only choice and a perfect match for the mahogany frame of the Bobby FIscher 72 Series Chess Board.  One again this box is beautiful to behold without being too fancy.  It has an air of practicality about it suggesting that it was designed to do a job and it is going to do it well, by all means it will look good in the process but it's never going to compromise it's first purpose.  Complete with brass fitting and even a storage lock to further protect your cherished chessmen.  This is a storage box worthy of the historic pieces protected inside, a storage box worthy of the greatest of grand masters.

Hi all in the forums, Hi Carl,

This is another great contest, I wonder why there is not more people participating... maybe this need more visibility, like running an add on the front page or something...

Anyway, her is my entry:

As chess sets goes, my eyes where instantly attracted to the 72 Series, that is such a beautiful set and that would have being my pick, if didn't own it already! I really love that set... and finding another one that compete with it will be hard work, but I am sure I can find something on your website that is similarly great.

Then I find the Collectors Series Rosewood Chess Pieces... and I have to admit, as design comes, it does not get more classic than this, It is a design that is as good today as it was 100 years ago, you can't go wrong with a design like that... the word I am looking for is "timeless". And then of course there is the wood combinations of Rosewood and Boxwood... I don't own any rosewood set, yet i don't really own many sets, I think Rosewood is a really sexy looking wood, and on this design it looks it's best.

Pairing this set with a board is a bit tricky, for me, because as I say I never used this wood/color combinations before, I know for my black and white pieces I can't sue a black and white board, as the black pieces will basically disappear, so even though I like black and white boards, and every time someone thinks of a chess board think with with black squares, in reality we can't have it, because the contrast problem... so here I am totally tempted to go for a black and white board, Just because we can!

So I open the boards page and what is the first think I see? a Bobby Fisher 72 board that perfectly match my 72 set that I already own... this is not goign to be easy... Guys understand that when I got my set this boards where not available... So as boards comes now I am not sure if I should keep goign for a board with Black squares... or just pick the 72 one for the set I have here that I love so much... by the way I use a Drueke boar for 72 set right now.

So lest see the black boards to see if there is the one with black squares I think would look great with Rosewood pieces on it...

And there it is the Large Italian Prestige Anegre Chess Board, I usually don't like inlay boards much, but this one have, in my opinion, the perfect design for the Collectors Series Rosewood set... What I like is that it is a clean and simple design the board does not become a distraction it just want to do it's job, and be the perfect setting for a great set, and for me those are the best kind of boards. Even If I don't win this, I still would like to see a picture of this set and board together... I think the sizes match and I think the colors match too.

Now talking about Boxes.. this is something I don't know the first thing... The sets I get from www.officialstaunton.com come in a nice packing and I storage them on the same shipping package... sets I have got on other stores and on ebay, I storage them on Tupperware boxes... So for me a box should be something that keep the set together in my bookcase... adn this beign a big set... it needs a big box.. lest me see what is on the website...

My first option here is the Beechwood Magnetic Chess Box, basically because I like that natural wood color, my bookcase is the same natural hue... Just imagine you bring over this humble simple looking box and then pull out of it the Rosewood set, that would be a show... my problem now is that I don't know if the set actually can fit inside this box... we are talking about a big set here... and the information on the box says this will fit a set 95mm but the information on the set says it is 4.4 inches... Carl are you going to make me find a calculator here?

OK, calculator says that 95 mm is 3.7 inches. which basically is the size of most of my collection... I don't even know why I am goign for such big set... oh yeah.. because it looks great!

Next box on natural hue is the Luxury hand Made Mahogany Chess Box, Now this box looks fancy, if a thief brakes into my house and see that box he will think I have some valuable jewelry inside... and he will be right about it, A jewelry box for a beautiful set... I also appreciate that this box have measurements on inches, I like standards on the same website.

Now I see th the Makassar and the Walnut boxes... this is not goign to be easy... So in order to figure this out i did some rough photoshop job really quick to see how the set looks with the boxes... Pieces are nto scales and so on... it is just to see the colors:

This is the Mahogany:

phpP7kuEj.png

This is the Makassar:

phpynxdmv.png

And this is the Walnut:

phpwB5Zip.png

I think color matching... the Makassar and the Walnut are a really close tie... but in this case I think for me the winner is the Luxury Walnut Chess Box.

So there we have it, it was not easy, but My picks are:

The Collectors Series Rosewood Chess Pieces:

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/collectors-series-chess-pieces

With the Large Italian Prestige Anegre Ches Board:

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boards/products/large-prestige-anegre-chess-board

And the Luxury Walnut Chess Box:

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boxes/products/luxury-walnut-chess-box

I think I run a bit longer than 200 words... sorry about that, it is hard for me to contain my self when talking about stuff I love.

Ones again, Carl, TY for running this contests, this is a great support for the community.

Wow Imperial-guard... this is exactly what I would have gone for If I didn't had already the 72 set... that is amazing. Great eye.

maik1988

It's hard to not agree with all of you about these sets! I think also that the 72 and collector designs are among the most attractive offered currently, not just within OS but including other retailers as well. If I hadn't had my HoS player's series, I think I would have pulled the trigger on the collector series in rosewood already at the current price. Seems like very good value.

staviceri

Hello everybody. This is my favourite combination from the Official Staunton website:

72 series chess pieces

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/fischer-spassky-72-series-ebony-chessmen

These pieces need no introduction for people who know a bit of chess history. Bobby Fischer played his legendary match against Boris Spassky in 72, which gives these beautiful chess pieces the name they have. These particular pieces have been well represented in contemporary reproductions, but no reproduction has come as close as Official Staunton to capturing the essence of this gorgeous but simple chess set.

The pawns reach slightly less than half the height of the majestic king, but they are nonetheless stately and important-looking! I particularly like the ball on top of the pawn, and the elegant way the pawn tapers down into a nice base that is not too wide!

The knight embodies what is attractive in this set. Namely: simplicity and elegance converging into one. It looks short but brawny, strong and flexible at the same time. Perhaps the knight was Bobby’s favourite piece??

The rooks are shorter than what I am accustomed to seeing on other high quality sets. However! They look powerful and representative of their force on the battle field regardless!

The bishop again looks simple but adorned at the same time. Fischer was known for his beautiful simplicity, and that’s what I see when I look at these bishops!

Finally the king and the queen round off this set quite nicely. They look like a great couple, with a similar style to them, as well as very nicely finish.

Bobby Fischer chess board

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boards/products/bobby-fischer-72-series-chess-board

Of course, now that I have chosen Bobby Fischer’s chess pieces, I have to choose the board that most matches those fabulous pieces: The Bobby Fischer chess board! This beautiful board made of mahogany, maple and palisander really goes together very well with the pale, mother-of-pearl boxwood pieces and the deep, black-as-night pieces. Take a look at the picture from the Official Staunton website below to see the beautiful combination that they make:

I think the white squares look just about right for these pieces, don’t you agree? The pieces look really good on them. The black squares also are very nice however. I like how there is some colour variance in them so that they go from light brown colours to darker, almost black colour. This gives the board more depth and a really strong character, not to mention some sophistication.

I learned to play on a simple set and board, and this set and board from Official Staunton somehow reminds me of that time and makes me feel a little bit nostalgic. Perhaps that is what I like the most about this combination and why I would really enjoy playing on this board with these pieces with friends and family.

Luxury walnut chess box

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boxes/products/luxury-walnut-chess-box

The box is not as important for me as the pieces and the board, because you always play with the pieces and board. I was looking at the website however and I started to think that it would actually be handy to have somewhere to put the chessmen when I am not using them.

On the inside, most of the boxes on the website looked really good, with soft material to protect the pieces. What I really liked about this box, though, and what makes it stand out for me, is that the wood has some very nice dark highlights running through it:

It looks very well made. In fact, when I look at it it gives me the impression that I would like to keep something important to me inside for safekeeping.

The metal hinges look very nicely made and the lock is a nice touch! I like that about the box, but also that it looks very nicely designed, with metal hinges and even a lock, so you can lock the box with chess pieces if you wanted to.

Overall, I think the box completes the idea that I talked about earlier. The pieces and board make me feel that I would like to share small moments with friends and family playing this game. They give me the idea that playing chess is an intimate, indulgent experience as well. That the box to just keep the pieces in is so beautiful and well made really drives that idea home for me.

Thank you for reading and good luck to everybody!

B & C Company Reproduction Antiqued Ebony Chess Pieces

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/b-c-company-reproduction-chess-pieces

This is my choice of a set that is ready to be released.  You have to love the slender stems of the chess pieces throughout.  There are other carvings that give this set uniqueness.  Take a look at the knight.  The knight is well carved and takes it style from Jaques sets but is distinct on its own. One couldn’t help but notice the wide bases of each piece which gives  a touch of class to this extraordinary set. The bishops in a BCC set of course are distinct from Jaques having a larger top to them.  The pawns many times are overlooked in a set and are just ho hum, nothing great just a pawn. All you have to do is take a look at the pawns in this set.  The collar the slenderness all adds up to the most stunning pawn I had ever seen in a chess set.

We haven’t even got to the luxurious ebony wood this set is made out of.  In the future it may not be able to obtain.  The “white” pieces are antiqued to perfection and the et is finished off with Jaques type stampings which add the finishing touch. If I had to improve on the set I would only ask for the king to have around it’s base the OS lettering showing where it was acquired.  Surly a heirloom to be passed down from generation to generation.

Large Italian Prestige Anegre Chess Board

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boards/products/large-prestige-anegre-chess-board

To compliment this extraordinary chess set one must obtain an extraordinary chess board for the magnificent pieces to play on.  This would be similar to an accomplished pianist resting on the bench playing the keys.  The board should look great on its own yes and this sure does with its glossy finish.  It should add to the beauty of the chess set and not take away from it. This chess board does all that. It is made of anegre and maple woods, two gorgeous woods in their own right. When these two woods are combined they compliment each other and the gloss finish is the icing on the cake.  The grains as in all these fine boards made by master wood crafters in Sorrento, Italy run horizontal.  I like that, some call it old school so I guess I am old school. Wood grains should always run the same way as to facilitate sanding without scratching.  I also like to see grain running horizontal on a chess board versus vertical, it just makes sense.

The only thing that would make the board better is to go pick it up in person and spend a few days in Sorrento.  Sitting on a balcony over looking the sea sipping on Chianti.  What a picture.

Luxury Walnut Chess Box

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-boxes/products/luxury-walnut-chess-box

We get to the most overlooked component of a complete chess set.  A person takes the luxury pieces out of the box, sets them up on the great looking board and cats the box aside as it is usually nothing to look at.  All they care about is to keep the set dust free and safe while in storage. You can never be so wrong if you think that way.

Once you take a look at that Luxury Walnut Chess Box you will not want to hide it away after you set up the chess set. It looks so good you may not want to hide it away when the set is secure in the box.

Once again this box comes from the same place as the board. The craftsmen in Sorrento do only the best work and take pride in it too. Like I said about the board, the only thing better than the box, would be to go pick up the box in Sorrento, Italy.

The finest solid walnut goes into this box as is obvious by the pictures, the grain is just breathtaking.  The brass key and hinges just add to the contrast of the beauty of the wood.

Thank You Carl & Family for once again running a contest that is more than generous.

I hadn't heard about your site before this competition. Now I find myself browsing it daily. I always thought I knew what I liked when it comes to chess design. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was open to changes on my view...

Dubliner Eboby Chess Pieces- £199

phpmhq17K.jpeg

https://www.officialstaunton.com/collections/chess-pieces/products/dubliner-ebony-chess-pieces

I would call myself a conservative guy when it comes to chess pieces. The general beauty of the sharp and pointy Bishop, the solid Knight and the distinct difference between the King and the Queen on a Staunton set is what I considered a reference when it comes to chess pieces.

After I saw the Dubliner chess pieces I can not take my eyes off it. At first the Knight throws you off at it is nothing like a normal knight. However, the design is elegant and I can imagine it would be several ways to hold it while moving it. Then we have the bishop. Again, the head of the piece is not as long and elegant as it normally is so the first time I saw it I thought it was simply wrong and clunky. After looking at it again and again and again, I find it to build up the common design of the pieces beautifully! It shoots the design straight onto the Queen which is a bigger piece, but has a lot of similarities. The king with the spear on the crown does not have a very distinct difference from the queen. Up to that point they are the same height, but the spear makes it majestic. The rooks are massive, but at the same time, the non square/cylinder shaped head makes it match the smooth lines of the rest. The cup style head again matches the rest of the set brilliantly. What a way to make a massive piece like that elegant! The pawns with their drop head shape is the only piece I am not a hundred percent sure of yet. It's kind of like they took a bishop's head and shrunk it. A fully spherical one would not make it stand out from a normal set though so I am liking it more and more. The weight and the massive king height is really appealing! I can imagine it being a joy to play with!

I have never thought about what I like about chess boards. To me they have been secondary while the pieces are most important. I love the different wood materials though so I have probably been lying to myself. I realized I am torn between a minimalistic board and one with a frame. After looking around I realized that a type of board I haven't seen before was the one I found most appealing. A platform base one. Just being able to see the sides of the squares makes the craftsmanship pop. First I was looking at the mahogany platform board, but I feel the walnut Anegre will fit my pieces better. First let's look at the squares. 58mm is big, really big. With the tripple weighted tall pieces of the dubliner set they will fit perfectly. The grandness of the board will actually compliment the elegant lines in the dubliner set because they are also massive, not only elegant. The base with its beautiful profile will make this board be an extension of any beautiful table. The fact that the board also does not have any annotations on it makes it more appealing to me as well. I am used to playing with annotations, but I have to admit that it does look a lot better without them. Also, there is no logical place for them to be printed either.

Box:

Luxury Makassar Chess Box - £199

Finding a box which could fit the pieces when the king is 4.7 inches is hard. Most boxes go up to 4.4 so a box which would fit the pieces perfectly standing or laying is challenging. I was able to find a box that not only allows my King to stand a bit tilted, but also would match the board perfectly. The Box I am talking about is the Luxury Makassar Chess Box

This box allows the pieces to live in separate compartments side by side and the room for the pieces makes it easy to stack them the way you want. A very nice finish both on the outisde and inside, which is important as you are using the inside just as much as the outside. The green filt color stands nicely with the brown and dark shades of the rest of the box. A nice detail with the key so you can lock away such a beautiful set of chess pieces. The wood itself has horizontal lines which gives it more vibrance and life. You can almost feel the wood just by looking at it and the gloss finish gives it a very luxurious feel. That the lines aren’t perfectly straight reminds us that this is living tree and each unit is unique!

The three items I have put together exceeds the £800 limit by £97, but if I won I would gladly either leave the box or pay the remaining amount.

To me the pieces and board are more important and the setup I have put together just completely changed my view on how a chess set can be set up!

Thanks for opening up my eyes:)

Has a winner been picked in this yet? Also, @ GM4U: do you have any updates on when the library size set will become available? Perhaps this week or maybe a little later? Best!

We need a lot more entries!! so the competition is still open!! The Libary set will be available next week :)

It's been a while since the last post in this, so perhaps the competition lost a bit of visibility. Thanks for the update on the set's release. I will be following that one closely.

Also (@ GM4U): Is Official Staunton planning any sale in connection with Black Friday (tomorrow) or the holiday period coming up in December? There was a discussion about sales elsewhere in the forum but I was wondering about OS?

@ Hel-Reaper: I wouldn't think that that would be a problem since the 72 is a popular design and would likely be restocked. Only GM4U can say with certainty though.

I do agree that more people should post in this, since it does seem to be a genuine competition where writing about something you like gives you a chance to win a great prize. In fact, the lack of attention is a bit of a problem, since GM4U indicated that OS would like more entries before choosing a winner to gift his or her chess set bundle. Perhaps a second deadline should be imposed?
