The Importance of knowing Pawn endgames.

So after looking at this puzzle for a few minutes, I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible for us to defend our e3 pawn. If we play Kf3 then e4, we end up in a horrible position after we get put into zugzwang.
So I'm actually thinking we should just immediately kamikaze the pawn by playing e4, then shuffle our king around the e1-f1-f2-g2 squares and make it impossible for the black king to infiltrate.

Actually we might just be dead lost here no matter what we do.
White is playing for a draw. Black is playing for a win.
I think Susik Gaboyan must really like the chessmood site as she talks about and recommends it a lot, is that right?

Nice!! you're right, e4 is the only move that can make a draw in this position. It's great that you found it.
Thanks! Although my overall strategy was completely wrong. I got the first move correct (e4) but got the rest of the line wrong.
This was a very instructive lesson for me. Thank you for sharing!
And thanks also to llama for those helpful diagrams.

Wow, in a nutshell ... first you need to recognize that draw is the best you can do because of potential zugzwang and sacrifice a pawn with e4+. Then if black takes with the pawn (which should be done because if king takes it is much easier to draw) you have to find g4 sacrificing another pawn, but creating a passed pawn in order to occupy black king just enough to eliminate his pawns. Cool example of active defense.
All of this when you are a pawn up with just pawns on the board. Endgames are fascinating.
How do you assess the position and what are you going to play for white?
Probably for 1900+ level.
