another easy endgame

Black should have repeated moves with 4...Nd4+. Then white needs to find something else, proving that his move 3 and 4 can't be optimal.

Not arguing with tonydal, but doesn't any pawn promotion or Kc1 mate next move? Only knight moves or king moves that let the black king out fail.
edit: I am assuming (as was tony), that white is at the bottom of the board.

no.. if we go by BUR_OAK or TONYDAL, then black has to make a blunder.. lets see if white has 1. Kc1 as its 1st move.. 1. Kc1, Nxb7 so, what do you see? so, white can never checkmate black as it is not possible.

You're missing a mate in 1.
1. Kc1 Nxb7 2. Nb3#
I don't understand this puzzle. The 2 best moves: 1. Kc1 (followed by 2. Nb3#) or 1. b8=Q are both considered "wrong." I don't see how Nb3+ does anything besides waste a move.

My first try was b8 and was shocked to find that it apparently doesn't win -_-
The move b8=Q wins, unless black moves his knight to the b file and you foolishly take it, stalemating him.
1. b8+Q Nb7, 2. Qe5# (or 2. Nb3#)
or
1. b8+Q Nb3, 2.Nxb3# (or 2. Qe5+ Nd4+ 3. Qxd4#)
