Best Endgame Tablebase?

Sort:

I don't know very much about endgame tablebases but I understand that they are a very useful tool for studying complex endgames.  For those who do not know, an endgame tablebase is an engine produced list of every single possible position and the result of every single possible move in an endgame with less than X number of pieces on the board.

What I'm looking for is the deepest endgame tablebase available for my engine.

For those who are quite likely to mention this anyways :)... I understand that they aren't allowed here @ chess.com and I have no intention of using them for that purpose, rather, I'd like to add it to my engine/gui for speedier postgame analysis.

Looking forward to being pointed in the right direction :)

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

The Nalimov Tablebases Integrate well with Fritz, and give perfect play for 6 peice endgames. Think there are ones available for 7 peice or more, but not yet so easy to get hold of. Not sure on this.

Here you can get everything up to 6-men tablebases

There isn't any 7-men tablebase published and the tablebase would be approximately 200 terrabyte big so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it.

As you say, tablebases have grown in size to the point where they are no longer easy to distribute, either on DVD or any other media. There is a chess site that allows free access to their six-man tablebases. It's here:

There is also a link to a program there called Freezer. I have it and have found it useful for analyzing my endgames. The author has a doctoral thesis in which he suggests that there is probably a better way than to develop tablebases for many pieces. His paper can be found here:
