I would assume so because that position is impossible if Black is going down

spherenine

To reiterate, black can't be going down.

magicmaster

Black has to be going up because the double check on whites King would be impossible to achive, Black is going up, pawns each have 5 moves to go before promotion. Black should win with connected pawns

magicmaster

well its a lot of analysis to be sure but it seems like white can take one of the pawns at times but black then forces a rook trade and advances the h pawn to win?

i think the most important idea in this position is knowing which side the pawns are heading

it surely must feel like pulling the trigger of a gun not knowing whether the muzzle faces you.Cry

for starters, could the person that posted the puzzleplease provide more clarification on which way white/black i sgoing? for sake of argument, there ARE puzzles that begin in positions taht can not be come by in the normal play of chess. So, for the sake of the puzzle i think hat it is possible for black to be going down. Either way, i thibnk that it's irrelevant because it appears to be pretty easy for black to promote whichever way he is going I'm pretty sure i'm correct, but i haven't bothered researching and posting all the lines. Finally, i'm not even sure that this will post, because while the cursor is moving across the screen while i type, none of the characters are showing up on my screen (as if I'm writing or typing in invisible ink)... so, i'm not sure how this will come out and I appologize for any typos that i may have missed

I posted this, and yes, black is going up.  Sorry for the confusion, the pawns are "a" and "b" pawns. The best white response here would be Kc6.  It may appear that it should be easy for black to promote, but in playing out different scenarios I see white being able to force a rook for rook/pawn trade with the b pawn and then being able to stave off the remaining King/a pawn advance and force stalemate.  Also, white doing a flank attack could potentially lead to problems.

It depends on wether black's pawns are going up or down the chessboard. You didn't make that clear.
