Please have a look at the following position:

Of course you would like to win this endgame. But how to handle it?

1. The direct attempt fails

2. The attempt to win the d6-pawn. Correct idea, but wrong execution (Black always manages an king opposition)

3. The correct idea and the correct execution: White hinders the king opposition

So, you have seen that the solution is not allowing the direct or distant opposition of the black king, but take the oppositions (direct, distant and diagonal)  yourself as White player. So Black king comes into ZUGZWANG and white king reaches one of the six "key squares" to win the d-pawn

Very instructive...I was looking at some GMs' endgame studies and I did not give a meaning all these moves which seemed to me 'pointless'.Now I see .
