We are going to learn how to checkmate with a king and major piece against a lone king. Here are the steps.

1. Activate your pieces. Use the opposition with your king.

2. Make a box with your major piece. Use your king to help make it smaller until the enemy king is forced to the edge of the board.

3. Set up a checkmating position.

 

Another thing you can do is make a waiting move--also called losing a tempo.
You might also want to make a waiting move to gain the opposition.
