To put it frankly, my misunderstanding of the three-fold rep rule on ths site is PISSING ME RIGHT OFF!!!! Have lost two games now due to this gat dang misunderstanding, and's I'm gonna freak if I F it up again! No words alone please, as it did jack shite for me last time.
:@!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frustrated...damn

corum

Can you post a link to the game where this happened?

Tricklev

If your missunderstanding is causing you to loose, then why not ask for an explanation?

wango

Ok, now I'm confused.  How exactly did you lose on threefold repetition.

Ok smart as I am, I sometimes have trouble putting words to practice...this is one of those cases, which is why I was asking for an example. My understanding of the rule is that if you move a piece consecutively three times in a row (back/forth) on to the same square (six tempos minimum?) three times that the game is drawn upon request...no?

Gomer_Pyle

It can't be just your piece. All the pieces on the board must be in the same position for the third time. No pawns must have been moved or taken.

aansel

Here is how it works--if at anytime during the game (it does not have to be consecutively) the same position is ABOUT to occur for the third time the player who can force this claims a draw. One caveat, I believe in certain blitz computer formats once the position has occurred (after the move) the draw is claimed. Be careful as the position has to be identical with the SAME person to move to claim the draw.

snefruChess

A common misconception is that the rule is draw by repetion of moves. The rule is that the game is drawn when a position arises for the third time with the same player to move. It does not have to be on consecutive moves.

rileyriley

Another often-unknown rule is that for the position to be considered "the same," all the pieces must have the same abilities as well as position.  For instance, if two otherwise identical positions differ because the king can castle in one and not the other, then they do not count as a repetition.  Similarly, if an en passant capture is possible in one but not in another, they do not count as a repetition.

I was recently playing an opponent OTB who thought that he could just move one of his pieces back and forth three times and claim a draw.  Think how hard it would be to win if you had to stop that from happening!

You think you're smart and you speak like that, trying to ask for help? Did the words, 'here is the game, please explain 3 fold rep. to me' not enter your mind?

This made me laugh, the fact that you judge others based on angery typeface. I laugh at you, and I laugh at your peception of cognition (for lack of a better way of putting it, such as rude, ignorant, smart-lip, etc.). You obviously don't know what it's like to struggle in this fashion. Is a super-computer supposed to be able to open a program in a format it isn't programmed to recognize? I would think not. Ty for the chuckle.

Also, I'm not gonna waste someone's time by having them go through a game just to tell me, in text, what I already understand.

Anyway, ty to those that did happen to understand the request and was able to effectively put it in type.

Just to clarify; all of MY pieces, even if it's just a king, need to be in the same place? Not his, but mine?

All pieces, period.

All pieces, period

it's too bad that people are so likely to critisize people when they ak for help when they themselves just don't understand
