When to play.....the pin

It occurs the odd time in games where a castled king for either white or black wherethe f2/f7 pawn is missing. And the opposing Queeny checks along the a7-g1 diagonal or a2-g8. When is it a good reason to play Rf2/Rf7 to block the check or to play Kh1 or Kh8? I hope this explains it properly but if not just post a question and i try to explain it better.

The natural move is Kh1 but ive often seen masters or high level play the rook to block it instead of moving the king.

Id prefer people with understandings of this especially masters please.

yes it doesn happen often alright, ive seen it a few times, think 2 or 3 times from the same player who is an FM whom i know.

Just something occured like it in a game im playing and i played the natural move Kh1 as i thought it was safer (while also being up a whole bishop)

Ill see if i can get some scenarios of games or something
