Why did my game end in a stalemate?

I'm still new to chess, decided to play it safe and get rid of all his pieces. Right when i was about to checkmate him, the game ended in a stalemate. I'm still confused about it (and sad).

You accidentally drew your opponent through a stalemate.  Stalemate is a rule where the game ends in a draw if a player has no legal moves on his turn.  Here, you unfortunately made a move which took away all of the Black king's available squares but without putting the king in check.  Therefore, it is not a checkmate.
