Hello I’m a 1500 player and some openings I like are the English and the Sicilian, and I’m picking up the Larsen. I am however worried that I’m not at the level to appreciate how complicated these positions are and this could stunt my progress. I also know how to play more basic openings. Should I stick to the more classical openings?

I honestly think it’s a waste of time to focus on memorising lots of openings at 1500 because most other 1500s won’t necessarily even play into main lines after 8 or so moves.

My approach, which has taken me from 700 last year to 1900 this year has been (and this might sound boring) sticking to one or two openings as white, and two openings as black (in response to e4, or d4).

As white, I learnt Ruy Lopez and Sicilian Najdorf as black I learnt Sicilian Najdorf and Nimzo Indian (to a limited extent) and if my opponent plays anything else, I’ll just respond by playing natural developing moves.

Your time and effort at your level is best spent on tactics and endgames in my opinion.
